  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Just sold my DRZ400 and decided that the 510smr will be my next bike. I like the '09 and '10 the best. I read these years were prime. Having trouble tracking down the maintenance schedule for this bike. Mainly want to know, for casual/spirited street riding, what is the valve check interval and oil change interval?

Any bugs or fixes that need to be addressed to keep her running forever?

Power: well, let's be honest, I'm not buying this bike because it has pretty colors (although it is, IMO, the best looking sumo on the market!)...what do you guys do to make the 510 sing? I don't need extra power, it just want it running at its fullest potential.

What do you guys do with the EFI? Do I need a programmer? (I'm completely 100% clueless in regard to fuel injection)

Thanks!!

Check valves every 1000 miles, easy to do.
Bike won't run forever but there are alot of little things that can be done to the bike, read a few threads, take notes on mods.
You will need to buy iBeat software and an interface cable (works with the Mikuni EFI) if you want to alter the EFI mapping to get full potential or buy an aftermarket EFI mapping product.

I used to have an 07 SM450R. One day at BeaveRun cart track, I swapped with a friend's modified DZR400. The DZR was simple and fun, but the difference between the two on track was night and day. The Suzuki felt like an overweight big vs. the Husky. You'll love it.

I would change the oil very often, especially when i got into road circuit track days with it. About every hard weekend at the track, oil one week, filters and oil the next. Used AGIP 5w60 which had better clutch feel than any other oil i used. With 1.6L of capacity, the oil goes bad fast, and you need full synthetic.

Still, i threw a rod bearing at around 3000 miles. To be be fair, I would redline the Hell out of that thing. Coming out of the last turn in 5th gear was a bit harsh for the motor.

I'm putting together an 09 TE510 at the moment. Can't tell about power or maintenance, I purchased it not running (bad head gasket). Motor wise, it's pretty much the same as my 450.
