  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

UK TE511 Owners? Thinking of getting one for trail riding and LDT/Enduro.

Guys,

I currently ride a TTR 250, and feel it is slightly outclassed on the lanes over more knarly stuff, and doesn't have enough power to loft the front over things.

I like the bike, as it is comfortable, gets great MPG and has good road manners (can easily cruise at 60-70).

I'm now after a more focused bike, so looking at the likes of KTM EXC 350/450's or the Husky TE511.

I'd be interested to hear from UK owners as to what their experiences of this bike has been.

Bearing in mind I want:

Something with a key
Primarly for trail riding and LDT use, possibly Enduro if I get better at riding offroad.
Smooth EFI that doesn't need any messing with to get the bike to run nicely
Reliability
Good road manners (I'm concerned with the TE511s cruising speed, apparently the transmission is very narrow, and upgearing it will ruin 1st gear on the tight stuff)
Reasonable running costs - how much have you spent in the last year keeping it on the road?
Good dealer support - My nearest is 30 miles away, which seems a long way when you live in a reasonably big City!

Cheers

Conrad

I'm not from the UK but have 2200 miles on my TE511. Love that bike. The performance differences from a TT250 tot his bike is HUGE. also it can be geared to run fine down the road and still do gnarly single track, i do it all the time. Bike needs almost nothing, is very solid and is a pleasure to own. IMHO.

UK rider here. I'm riding a 2011 449 and only ridden the bike once from new. Current modification: TC449 forks, rear shock lowered by 4mm both ends re-sprung and valved for my weight. JD tuner fitted with the Akro can supplied with the bike and 02 sensor removed. The bike runs fine and its only for the dirt not road.

The power is lacking for me. However my speed is good so although the bike may not be as explosive as other bike brands i'm riding quick. The further alteration i've done making ready for my second ride: Iridium plug, J D tuner altered for quicker pick up revs, refitted air box with filter, GMX expansion tank, repositioned the throttle so that the return cable now touches the brake cyclinder and taken some of the free play out of the throttle. The throttle may be slow action as standard it does require a lot of twist before it hits the stop. I may change this throttle to a quicker action after this weekends ride.

I've owned and ridden both the KTM 530 and 450. These bikes do not handle as good as the TE449 but have more power. The 530 is interesting to ride in wet muddy conditions and has good road manners. The 450 doesn't do it for me. 449 has a similar smooth pick up to match a 530 but a little less power. The 449 feels lighter to ride against both these KTM's

What have you spent in 2500 miles in service parts? How often do you have to check things?

Chain, spockets and oil filters. Have not broke a thing nor has anything really needed attention. Solid mount. I have checked the valve a few times, still in spec.

Thanks for the response, I have two more questions:

1) How often do you change your oil - and by hours or miles? I believe there is no hour meter so presumably they want it changed by the mile?
2) You mention you up gear it with no problems for dual sporting - what is the cruising speed on the road with standard gearing, and what do you change the gearing to when you up gear it? Once you have up geared it do you have to use the clutch a lot in the tight stuff in 1st?

Thanks

Conrad

p.s. when will my posts stop awaiting moderation? I have read the forum rules and see nothing about it there?

UK rider here (Yorkshire) i have owned mine for 2 or 3 months i have a Te 510 and love it i have gone up one tooth up on the front doing lots of green laning odd crosser track and minimal road work nothing to complain about from me. p.s i know mine is car-bed but has it's advantages over FI . i like home twiddling , is this going to be your only ride ??
