  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

U wont believe what I found on top of the piston!

The motor just died after running for 5 min, then the it felt like the kick starter would just lock up when you lightly push it down, move it back and forth in gear and it will come loose again. Well, I took the motor out and stripped it, low and behold there is a folded washer on top of the piston. It has nicked the piston and valves....but really not bad. I will hone/buff the head and valves and most probably replace the piston and valves while I have it open. I think the washer came through the carb - could not find anywhere else. It is a good thing I opened the motor, I found some other loose bolts/nuts (like water pump ass'y).

When I picked my bike up the mechanic at the shop mentioned to me to be very careful with the washer from the air cleaner as they had seen a few go through motors.

Don't suppose the washer off your air cleaner is missing ?

Snail - I went through the tech drawings to find that washer, and I think that is where it came from. Between the plastic foam frame and the metal mounting frame it looks like there is washer (that is missing)

I had something similar happen to a Honda 175. Part of the choke broke off and went through the intake vale, rattled around, found it's way out the exhaust and logged in the muffler. It was mostly a zink casting, so it broke up into small chunks. There was a small spring loaded steel flapper that balled up pretty much like that washer. The bike ran for years after that.

Yer it is probably item 11 in the image below.

Apparently when cleaning the filter most guys remove the bolt and washer, remove the filter then replace the bolt and washer so they don't get lost.
Problem is when it comes time to put the filter back on and you pull the bolt out the washer can easily drop off into the air box union.

I'll be keeping a close eye on mine, hope yours is OK

Good info, and it makes total sense. Funny story; I had a big 500 years ago, I was ripping the beast down the trail, popp the clutch and pull a massive wheely. All the sudden the whole motor locks up and I nearly kill myself!. Drag the bike back, at home i pull the motor and completely ripp it appart. Well, I find broken bearing pieces that got stuck between the gears (the lock up), we then start looking at where the bearing came from, there was a piece that had the bearing number intack. the motor was layed out on a table with literally every part stripped and tagged as per manuall. We then reallize the bearing is a bearing that holds one of the cam gears - But, that bearing is present and undamaged! contact the previous owner. It came to lite that he "might'v" dropped that bearing down the timing chain shaft down into the motor and was too lazy to split the motor. So when I popped the wheely the bearing was flung onto the gears and Bang! Funny but true story. Merry Christmas.

As soon as I read this I went out to the garage and pulled the seat off . I think I'm going to find an o-ring, or rubber washer the appropriate size and put it on the bolt shaft ( between the washer and filter to hold the washer captive) when I change the air filter or remove for servicing . I'll come up with something just so I don't have to make sure that it's in place .

You'd think that it couldn't get past the backfire screen.:excuseme:

I mean, unless you remove the backfire screen when you remove the element for cleaning....or it has been removed permanently. My backfire screen has never been out of place yet for any reason.

I pull the filter, bolt and washer off the bike at the same time and reinstall it all together. I heard about people doing this many years ago and always pull them together so no issues. I would for sure check that your valves are straight and seal well.

i would have a valve job done, or have them checked to make sure they aren't bent. would find it hard to believe that it bounced around in there , without bending a valve. wouldn't have to be much....

Yep, I will be pulling the valves out and checking them. If they are not spendy I mught just replace them since everything is open.
