    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

TXC 250R advice

Hello all. I’m a new member looking for some feedback on a Husky. A local dealer has a closeout Italian-made ’14 TXC 250 R left in stock. I have not owned an off-road bike for nearly 20 years, so I’m extremely ‘out of the loop’. I recently acquired a property that would be great riding, and I have the bug. I’ve mostly looked at Japanese bikes thus far, but there aren’t many options that cover everything I want. I really want a trail/woods bike with electric start, kickstand, efi, etc. The Honda 250X and Yamaha WR are the only full-size Japanese offerings, and there are none to be had in my area. As mentioned, I haven’t been on a dirt bike in 20 years, so I don’t want anything too powerful, but I’m fairly tall, so something like Yamaha TTR230 or other play bike isn’t going to work.

I did ride off-road quite a lot from age 9-18, and had street bikes for several years, so I’m not a complete beginner, just rusty. I’m 6’5”, 185lb, and the area I’ll be riding is 80 acres of rolling pasture with a few acres of timber. It will be used off-road only, so I’m not interested in dual sport models. Do you think the TXC would be a good choice based on my size and experience (recent lack of), or are there better options? Are the Italian made bikes fairly reliable? I’m pretty mechanically inclined, so periodic maintenance isn’t a problem, but I’d like to avoid anything with known mechanical issues.

Here is the skinny.

if you are a halfway decent mechanic buy it.
if you don't know which way to turn a wrench, buy a Japanese play bike.

Italian everything is beautiful and fast but high maintenance.

They are selling fairly cheaply now because they are discontinued models.

A Jap bike will be more trouble free.

The TXC is a good size for you and the stock suspension should work well for you.

You have to be prepared to do a little wrenching that's all.
 
I love my TXC 250r. But the 310 has a much better low end. If I did it again I would have bought a 310 not the 250.
 
That bike will be perfect for you ... Not that there are not other brands, but size wise for openers, EU bikes are larger in size ...

You are out of the loop maybe more than you know ... There's a new 4t engine in town ... It'll win almost type dirt bike racing today with-in reason and you can ride it down to corner to get some milk like it is a honda cub 50 ... The suspension on the Husky bikes are top line also.. .

That EFI stuff might be a head ache but once sorted, it works apparently .. And you don't have to worry about carrying a fuel pump if you are riding that close to home :O) ...There was the starter gear issue on this model? They have a kicker also so it is not a true stopper.

You don't sound like a guy who is gonna roll the miles on the bike so maintenance should not be too bad ... Oil change every 10-15 hrs ... Lube the chain ... Check valves sometime, air filter stuff is amount the same ... If you rode at age 18, you'll be ok if you survive the first 6 months of riding ..

PS - Husky was just purchased (last yr) by ktm from bmw .... Ain't that a wacky world?
 
@ 6'5" you will need to make some Ergo adjustments like lowering pegs and a taller seat/bars. For what you want it should be plenty good and then some. Enjoy:banana:
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. I went to the dealer this morning to check out the TXC. I really liked it. The pegs are too high, and bars are too low, but I expected that. It seemed taller than the Japanese 250's I've tried, though the seat height specs are roughly the same. Overall it just felt like it fit me better. The price they quoted me seems fair. I've seen a couple in other states listed lower, but this bike is at a very knowledgeable dealer with a great parts & service dept, which is worth a lot. I asked about the starter gear and was told it had been sorted out on the '14's.
