  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

two stroke oil question???

Not another 2t oil question by my experience.

I was using maxima super M 40:1 mix.

On a refresh I had tons of compression at the start up and on the break in rides. But as time went on it loses compression.

Now one of the few running 250 husqvarna bikes I have is used but has tons of compression.

Is the maxima super M for nickelsil and chrome cylinders?

The maxima 927 2t oil says it's a castor blend.

Right now I have castor 2t.

Is there a big difference in what oil we use for the cast iron sleeve and the nickelsil cylinders?

My new 98 250wr husqvarna never lost compression on the super M?

If it were me Bill I would be pulling the head and cylinder of the "refreshed" motor and looking for the cause. I think it would be as cartwheel said.
You may have "picked up" on a ring. Best check now before it does something horrible. Have you tried a leakdown test ?

Justintendo is correct about the oil.

Maxima is a great oil. Even talked to there engineer guy a while back. Says the higher K version has even more additives for wear. Heres a odd fact
they have not been able to match mother nature. The molecule in the bean oil is attracted to the hottest spot in the cylinder of all things.
So all this time and years bean oil has been great for two strokes.

But over all today says super M and the K have really burn cleaner and have better wear additives and esters. Whats a ester anyway?

No synthetic or mineral based oil can match castors high temperature resistant qualities, as GaryM noted, it is attracted to heat. That does not mean non-castor based oils are bad, they are not, but the simple fact is no oil can come close to a castor based oil when it comes to resisting the extremely high temps we sometimes see in aircooled engines.

and have better wear additives and esters. Whats a ester anyway?

In chemistry, esters are chemical compounds derived from an acid (organic or inorganic) in which at least one -OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an -O-alkyl (alkoxy) group.[1] Usually, esters are derived from acarboxylic acid and an alcohol. Esters comprise most naturally occurring fats and oils.[dubious – discuss] An important case are glycerides, which are fatty acid esters of glycerol. Esters with low molecular weight are commonly used as fragrances and found in essential oils and pheromones. Phosphoesters form the backbone of DNA molecules. Nitrate esters, such as nitroglycerin, are known for their explosive properties, whilepolyesters are important plastics, with monomers linked by ester moieties.

castor is very interesting as a lube, tons of reading about it. many like maxima, but i run klotz. im sure both are a fantastic oil. heres a quick explanation of klotz..
techniplate..synthetic oil 275 flashpoint
super techniplate..80% techniplate, 20% benol castor oil 460 flashpoint
benol...straight castor oil..race only, 555 flashpoint (stuff smokes and is dirty but is a top choice due to ability to mix with any fuel you can run a two stroke on.

i have never heard of different lubes for piston or cylinder materials...something else is going on with that motor

Its a little over simplifying it but an ester is a synthetic compound (oil) used first as the base for synthetic oils. Now most synthetic oils use PAOs as the base because they are more similar to mineral oils and less expensive to make. Esters are better from a purely performance standpoint.

This happened to me in the past with my 83/250. I figure this would be the place to ask.
You guys are gurus. The engine still had compression but not as much as when we first ran it. The used 84/250 has tons of compression. It kind of haunts me why the 83 would lose compression.

did you feel the loss with just your foot? or was it with a gauge? was it with the same gauge over the life of the engine?
