  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

125-200cc Two stroke maddness

I was in the shop the other day and they had a New CR125 and New WR250 both for under $4000. It has got me thinking real hard. I currently ride a TXC310 but would like to have a purpose built track bike. My riding partners run 2t strokes off road and I have recently gotten bitten by the 2t bug again.

My dilemma is get the Cr125 and run it as a 144 on the MX track (and build it into a 165 down the road) or get the WR250 and convert my 310 into full MX setup.

Or get on craigslist and buy a nice used 450r fro the track. The guy I ride with thinks I should get a KTM 300 for the track and trail.

So what do you think will I be happy with a CR125 on the track? I am pretty sure that I can do no better than my TXC 310 on the trail and it is pretty close on the track (I would have to stiffen up the bottoming on the front fork)

Your TXC310 should do track and trail just fine no? That said there is nothing more fun than a 125 based machine. Get one.

Don't use reason and logic to talk me out of a new bike.:D

The 310 works very well on the track too but If I wanted it to be full moto I would have to stiffen up the front and lighten it up a little. (19" wheel, ditch the kick stand, radiator braces thermostat/hoses and kick starter or starter motor etc.)

If you have any history riding a 125 on mx tracks then by all means GET ONE! As a 144 it's amazingly powerfull and I feel the suspension is very MX competent, stock. If this will be your first go at an MX track on a smallbore, it is a tough learning curve coming off a lazy fourstroke. But it will still be fun and you can't go wrong at that price.

don't do it, worst mistake of your life. Wheres this dealer btw?

On a side note: damn you bmw canada!

Well I went back to the shop and before I could make it to the Husqvarna section there it was. A 2014 Beta 300RR. Pretty impressive and adds more to the confusion of "The" next bike.

I am going to look at a ktm 2006 200XC today. I am still up in the air about the new Husky CR125

I would rather have a 125 husky any day over that bike. Good motors but very dated suspension and handling IMHO. To ME the husky has far better suspension, handling brakes, feel and stability. I am not a lover of KTMs before 08. My opinion only.

I was looking at the beta 300rr. Oh man that's a Purdy bike. Cody Webb is killing it on one in enduro cross..... If I win the lotto I'll have one (or two) of everything....
But for now I have a 2014 cr125. I rode it today at milestone mx in socal. So much fun. I have been riding 1/8 litre bikes for a little while so I'm comfortable ringing the piss out of them. So far I have 3+ hours on the bike. Stock except the 04 rm needle, pv adjusted down in the slot, and a smaller pj. I'm going to run it as a 125 for 15-20 hours then bump it up to the 144. Great handling , light weight , and so much fun....

The KTM was pretty cool but It lived a hard life. Not abused just used up, Would have been good for $1000 less but I did not want to insult the guy who though he still had a gem, so I had to pass on it.

Kelly what is your thought on the Cr125 vs the TXC 310? I am thinking they are going to be pretty close to each other in the area of usefulness.

I am thinking just working over the suspension again and living with it for a long time. I was also thinking of a trading my 2012 in on a 2014 TXC310 to get the new head and the Kehien FI (and a bike with 0 hours on it).

I do see a 2 stroke in my future but probably a 2015 and probably a 300.

Actually it is 09. That is the year they started to get the fork sorted.....finally. 08 fork sucks bad.

I've never seen a manufacturer have issues with suspension for as many consecutive years as ktm. They just can't seem to figure it out. The 96-97 Linkage bikes with the Ohlins shock were better than any of their PDS at least for 10 years, and maybe longer. That doesn't say much for their engineering and R&D teams..... My personal opinion is that WP is junk. I know you can improve it, but it takes a lot of work to get it to where it is as good as some other manufacturers. That said, I know the newer stuff is better, but they always seem a step or two behind.

I can't say anything about the 125 vs 310 but can about the 12 310 compared to a redhead. The red head actually a adds quite a bit up top. I really didn't ride it expecting much more but it has so much more up top it's hard to believe. Awesome bike but the 165's have me dreaming too :)
