    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

The main (lower) bulb failed to ignite in my X2. It had hardly had any use, and i found myself needing to replace it. At £57 for another bulb, i said NO, and looked for other options. The whole bulb and glass reflector and lens are one piece on the Trail Tech bulb, the bulb is bonded in with ceramic glue, so you cant just buy a regular HID bulb and fit it into the reflector.

and took a gamble that the reflector with lens would fit in the Trail Tech housing.
Well it did! I had to replace the plastic retaining ring behind with metal tabs to hold it in place.
Now i can replace the H3 HID bulb for £7 a time when the bulb fails.

You can also change the top light for an LED MR16 bulb like this one. It has 600+ lumens, brighter than the halogen it replaces.

Thats good to know, thanks. Are they really brighter than a 35w HID?
I probably done the wrong thing keeping the HID main lamp, i bet theres a better 4" LED one.
I dont know anything about LED bulbs. That one looks like it has no lens, how does it keep the weather out?
Any more info, advice on how to replace the top light for an LED one?
I want to avoid buying replacement parts from Trail Tech now, theyre SO expensive
 
No, it's not brighter than the HID. It is brighter than the halogen it replaces. I put an LED H3 bulb in mine to replace the lower lamp as well. Here is the link from ebay link.

That bulb isnt suitable, the weather will ruin it. A replacement bulb will have to be a sealed unit.
The Trail Tech UK website is down now aswell :confused:

I forgot about that.
Its not recommended to be fitted to the HID because they say it stops air cooling the bulbs and shortens their life. Im not worried about that now because the H3 HID bulb is cheap.
M advice to anyone buying an X2 headlight is to buy the halogen model, then upgrade the bulbs.This is what i should have done, and saved a lot of money.
I wouldnt have bought the X2 HID in hindsight.
If the UK site comes back online i will order a rock guard and replace the bulb like you have.

I removed the projector for my street X2 and fit a 10w led pod flood in there. I had to file the fins a little to fit. The rubber seal fit perfectly. The projector just didn't cut it. I swapped the high beam to a 55w bulb years ago after installing a relay for the headlights.
