    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Hi peeps,
I have read a lot of posts on here and its been great stuff
I am still torn between getting the tr650 strada or duke 690
(realise its a different price range)
Wish the strada had a 17 front tyre
I have heard they will discontinue the strada - maybe that affects resale value

1. mainly using it for a zip zapper with some highway use
2. on the ktmforums they say the vibration isnt a problem on the duke

A big price difference for ktm at $10K, you can still find the terra or strada for around $5K to $6K, I really enjoy mine

i agree the ride away price is hard to beat for a 650
what do you enjoy about your strada, if you have the time, love to hear....

Torque, speed and handling, it must have a heavy flywheel as I can range from 20 mph to 60 mph in 4th gear, just sayin. Good in the dirt, even better on the road 100 + - mph speeds. With the money I saved I've purchased a skid plate and extension wing from www.motosportz.com, crash bars from www.altrider.com, a side rack and top rack from www.brmoto.com, hand guards from www.barkbusters.net, soft luggage from www.wolfman.com and www.giantloop.com, I have had a few stalling issues, although not many and purchased the booster plug but with Maine's cooler temps I have not installed it yet and may not do it. - I'm planning a trip to Quebec, and Newfoundland, then back down through Nova Scotia this summer. I'll take some photos and keep everyone posted. I have not inquired but www.motofit.com still lists some Terra's for sale at $5900.

Note: The Husqvarna TR650 series is using the same temperature sensor for the fuel injection calculations as for the temperature readout in the dashboard. (Most other brands have seperate sensors).
This means that your dashboard display will show 20°C / 35°F lower than actual ambient temperature when you install the BoosterPlug.
There's no way around this, and it's probably not an issue for most people, but we want you to be informed about it

I would disagree with that statement. I guess it depends on what you are comparing to. CoG might be higher than on a Boxer bike, but the actual weight of the TR feels about half of a GS :)
Compared to my XT660Z Tenere, the CoG of the TR feels like is is about a meter lower. TR feels about the same as my girlfriend's DRZ400.
 
Get the Duke. It is an excellent bike. I love my Terra, best bike I have ever owned, and I have owned quite a few in the last 40 years.

I'm just not hearing the riding style that appeals to the Terra/Strada, and if the price is relatively not the factor, the Duke seems to fit the questions you ask.

If you pull the cat and put a good pipe on the duke with some knobbies, it could off road well, but finding a rear knobbie would be impossible without a wheel change. The llow seating allows for paddling for the unsure. A great bike. And my guess is for zipping around town the Duke will bring you more enjoyment. Six gears, 10 more ponies and 60 lbs lighter = fun on the tar.

And if I didn't enjoy the dual purpose price point 650 Terra with the BMW derivative powertrain, the Duke was my next choice. I do not believe the Duke will have the inherent long term problems of dealer service and immobilizer headaches of the Terra/Strada/Nuda, the Nuda which does not exist in the USA.

But...There is no law says you can't have one of each, cash permitting. Get the Terra, you'll love the versatility. On average, the Duke owners seem to put more miles on their bikes. (fuelly.com)
 
Intended use plays hugely into it, if price isn't a factor.

Holliganing? Get the Duke.

Dual sporting/Adventure riding/touring? Strada/Terra.


The 650 BMW is a fun, but quite tame engine. Smooth with out vibrations. Think of it like a Camry (yeah, I said that).

The Duke is for fun. More wild than mild. Racey. Think 370Z.

Would I want to ride the Duke how I ride my Strada? Not likely. I don't think it would be up to 400-500 mile days loaded with gear. Would I ride a Duke like I rode my KTM 450 SMR? Absolutely, short distances, engine flogged, brakes cooked, tires replaced every 1500 miles.
 
1. Seems to be a few stradas around the 2 to 3k tacho mark for resale .......... bored owners or something?

Nuda isn't an available option in the US. Non-the-less, it is not for me. I wanted a dual sport, lots of jeep trails, mountains, and such. But, I really wanted ABS. In the US, the only option with ABS was the Strada. I'm in process of making it more Terra oriented. In the end, like others are saying, your intended use sounds like the biggest factor, and is different than my intended use.

LOL. Take a look over at KTMTalk sometime...it's not just the Duke owners. People tend to refer to this as the Kool Aid affect.

The Husky uses the BMW software, so the keys are chipped and if that handshake has a problem it will disable the bike. There have been a few issues people have encountered concerning it, one owner in particular had his bike out of commission for a months. It doesn't seem any more prone than any other bike with that type of system though.

Like mentioned above, the key talks to the ecu, and if you lose the key, you are sol. You are immobilized. You get 2 keys with the new bike. Making and programming a new key takes an act of God. I like to have 3 keys, one for running, one for spare, and one for pulling copies off of which is safe and sound at home.

Yes from the bike videos I have seen the duke is seems more like a short board thruster
and the strada is like a longboard (surfing analogy)

why did they do the twin exhausts on the strada?
 
Thats good to hear.. the DRZ is a blast, love its amount of rubber, wish they would do one with a 650
The turning must be slower on a TR though, having a bigger front wheel

I was only referring to the perceived weight. Can't comment on the handling as I can only compare the Terra with the DRZ400E which have the same size front wheels. I don't have experience with the Strada or the DRZ400SM, but I would assume indeed the SM steers a tad lighter with the smaller wheel. But on teh other side I believe the rake on the Strada is shorter so that might compensate a little.
 
I picked up my first road bike yesterday; 650 Strada and the price I paid was half the price of my Gas Gas 300.. A demo with 900kms..I am used to occasional stall as I have only ever owned Euro bikes and besides I like revving her up. I love this bike more than life..more suspension travel and clearance than the KTM which is handy if there is a lump of wood on the road..engine is smoother than silk and gets better as she climbs..you can't compare the two and as on the dirt most times less is more..I can't wait to get up in the morning and ride her on a twist,wet dirt road a place where this bike would leave the KTM for dead..only problem is wearing it out and not being able to buy another one..I hear the BMW engine with give you 150,000 kms trouble free..climb aboard
