• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Touratech 650GS sprocket

One advantage of 'borrowin' engines from BMW is the already made parts and accessories. If I want an oil filter for my 511 I can always pick one up at at BMW dealer ... sorta like have 3 times as many Husky dealers available.

Two teeth down up front! I have considered going to 15, but even so worry a bit about the smaller diameter making the chain drag a lot on the swing arm slider. I may just go up three teeth on the rear instead, using an Ironman sprocket. They are really good, long lasting items. It means buying a new chain though, so not a cheap change. If I go that way I'll go to the DID Gold X Ring chain, another winner in my experience.

We are dyin here Kyle01! Take er for a spin and let us know, or is your ride season over due to the weather? I have the sprocket new in the box at home, but when I left on vacation it was 9 degrees and 6" of snow on the ground. Kenneth brings up a good point on the sliders. How does it look? How much adjustment is left on the chain? More importantly, did we just waste 26 dineros?

Ok, the chain has plenty of adjustment- and it doesn't look like it'll be too brutal on the chain slider. One bad thing that may or may not be an issue- the guys at touratech emailed me tonight and said that sprocket is for a 520 chain... And I'm not sitting by the bike right now but I'd say its a 525 (seeing as I didn't notice otherwise and my other bikes all have 525's)
Pitch is the same, sprocket is 1/16" thinner... A 520 conversion would drop a little weight. There's no way this bike needs a 525... My hyper runs a 525 and has tons more torque (and a 520 conversion is popular for it). Maybe I'm wrong and the TR runs a 520? Gonna look tomorrow but someone here probably will have answered my question by then! I would have given you a report on how it feels with the 14t (it's still in the 30s here, no snow) but I took the whole friggin bike apart (plastics) to try and get the airbox apart so I could put a uni filter on it... More on that later- don't bother. I'm gonna get it back together this weekend and bring it over to my buddy's 4x4 shop- I've got a sweet skid plate/bash guard/bottle opener being water cut from 1/4" aluminum and tig'ed together. I'm hoping it wakes it up a little... I'm not really on board with the "nobody home below 4k" thing. One thing regarding the air filter- wih the paper filter out the bike seems to run (didn't ride, just ran it on the lift) noticeably better- most notably when grabbing a handful of throttle- seems much more responsive. This filter is different than the GS filter no? I'll read some posts- I know someone went over it.image.jpg

PS- no idea why I'm always posting sideways pics. Drives me nutty. Anyways, you can see in the sideways picture- the chain is around midpoint in the adjustment. Should be fine. I'm a big fan of the DID Gold Xring as well- just put one on the hyper a few months back- so I've bought a new chain rivet tool to replace the one I misplaced. I can always shorten it if need be.
PPS- the dudes at Touratech are super cool and will surely give you a refund on the sprocket if you don't run it... Or- 14t throwing star!

Great approach Kyle01. Just a few holes with a 1" hole saw in the air box and a rerout of of crankcase breather tubes made all my drivability issues go away on my Buell. Thanks for the update!

Not having much luck looking for a top quality rear sprocket, 50 T. There are just a few folks that make sprockets for the F650GS, and 49 T is as big as they go. I called Dirt Tricks and they are looking into it. The rear looks very similar to the Dirt Tricks on my TE630 but I can't measure precisely without taking things apart. There may be a few milimeters difference, but no more. If one of the Husky dealers would look into this it would be great! Inner circle and bolt circle data does not seem to be available on the web.

So I took it out for a ride...it makes quite a difference. Like a huge difference. In a good way... I can only detect and rubbage of the chain on the top of the swingarm when it coasts, since under power the chain is tight and there is a lot of clearance then. I didn't ride super long, but it really seems to cover up the low speed off idle tendency to stall and the engine really pulls a lot harder and gets to the meat of it's power band a lot quicker. I did some idling in 1st gear and it will actually pull a little grade without stalling. A quick check says 4K rpm at 50ish mph. Speedo should be correct I assume since the speed sensor appears to be on the rear wheel?? It was my first ride on the Conti TKC's as well and they impressed me also, but more on that later. I'm really happy with the 14t.

12% less! No idea, but a 14t is a 12% reduction in gearing. I never paid attention. It's fine, believe me. I was bummed because it felt like such a dog before- this helps a lot.

Question...what rpm were you seeing at 50mph with the stock sprocket?

I was seeing 65 mph with the stock sprocket. I just installed a 15 tooth and the weather been so bad have not done a 4K speed chech. I expect it to be about 7 mph different. I did drive it around the neighborhood in 1st and 2nd gear. It was an improvement for sure. I plan on using my Terra probably more on road so it's fine. I would do the 14 if I was using it mostly off road
