  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

To those who have replaced their fuel pump...

Has anyone purchased theirs from High Flow Fuel Systems? I have one from them but i am having a problem with the pump that the outlet is not barbed, and the fuel line with a clamp keeps popping off. I am wondering if anyone else has this problem or a solution or if i got a dodgy pump with no barbs. I have attached a picture for reference.

I have not had any experience with that set up, but I would safety wire the clamp on. You may have to safety wire it to another hose clamp placed around the pump body if there is noting to wire it to.

Edit.

Also use FI clamps not the screw clamps

I have thought that if I had to deal with that, that I would get a steel punch, with a tapered, smooth shank, clamp the blunt end with a pair of vise-grips, and heat it up, over the gas stove for me since I don't have a torch. Then, put it in the outlet nipple and rotate it while pushing inward, trying to flare the nipple out. I wouldn't get the punch too hot, I'd get it increasingly hot with additional tries.

Try a high pressure hose clamp not the screw type. Also if you rough it up a bit it may hold better.

Maybe try finding a plastic piece of pipe that fits snugly over fuel pump & cut a 5-10mm long piece and glue to fuel pump to form your own barb!

I got a cheap pump with no barb, used gates tubing and a high pressure clamp. Once installed, I could not pull the hose off of the pump. So far it's working fine.

what type of clamp is a high pressure clamp? Old Husky rider, i thought of that but there is what looks like a non return valve inside the outlet and there is no way i could stick anything down there. seems a good clamp and tying it on might be the go.

I have contacted the manufacturer, and they have reccomended i am using the wrong type of hose so i will get myself some gates 30R10 rated hose and a high pressure clamp, hopefully that should solve it. Also as an added measure i may just etch some small grooves into the outlet to allow the hose to grab onto something and put a tie from the clamp to another to prevent slippage again. Thanks for the suggestions these 4 changes should be the best thing i can do!

As a side note High Flow were very helpful in thier response and were willing to provide me with a 38mm pump (the larger type that needs modifying of the mounting system) for free as it does have a barbed outlet.

That's what worked for me(minus any grooves). Good luck!

Well i have had the new fuel hose and clamp in there for a few weeks now but the hose came off again, the problem is that the hose has gone a bit soft and it is 8mm hose and the outlet is exactly 8mm so there is no 'stretching' it over the outlet anymore making it a weak connection again. what size hose have other people used? i am thinking if i can get smaller hose then it might be a tighter fit. Failing that, has anyone bought an aftermarket fuel pump with a barb? i would rather buy another pump and have full confidence....

8mm, 0.31", 5/16"

I have used 5/16" submersible hose that is now over 2 years old with no problems, CAcycleWorks 38mm oversize pump, with EFI clamps

yes i am using 5/16 hose too the setup looked like this

it is strange how some are having success with this but i am not, I just want to have complete confidence in the setup because no pump is no go and i don't want that out in the bush.

joedirt, that pump outlet looks exactly the same as mine, i dont think it will make a difference.

this is my latest try with my current pump, brass barb with the centre drilled out to 8mm and used plasti-weld epoxy to glue it in place. i need tosoak it in fuel overnight to see if the glue can stand up to it, the packet says good chemical resistance and it was the best stuff i could find at the time.

well the saga continues, i put the modified as above pump back in and went for a ride, lasted about 5 minutes before the bike stopped, no fuel pump noise... i thought it was strange but maybe i had stuffed something up when putting it back together. turns out the fuel hose burst and blew off the positive wire as in the picture below. i already had my suspicions about the fuel hose going soft as mentioned before, which are now justified, it says 30r10 on the side of the hose but no mention if it is made by gates. time to contact the guys i got it off from ebay....
