  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Time to upgrade tires

Well the XC's arnt holding up as well as I would have hoped, there seems to be alot more wear than I would have liked, but its only early days yet.

If these dont get as good as the original Michellins, then I will be reverting back to the mitchys.

I've never had a set of tires last like the Michelin Enduro 3 tires that came on the bike. I rode the hell out of those, about 1100 miles I think before I changed them. Then I put on a set of Michelin S12 XC soft to intermediate tires and only got about 3 rides out of those before they were toast(knobs ripped off and chunked everywhere, sides, center). In defense of the tire I was riding a lot of rockey/mixed terrain where alot of people were running trails tires, and they handled well but didn't last. Then I went back to a set of my favorite motocross tires, Bridgestone 401 and 402 which I think were replaced by 403 and 404. I have used these on open class 2 strokes for years and found that they work great for me, but I didn't know how they would work on my 510. I love them I've got about 3 days of 100 plus miles on them now and they look great. The sizing was a concern for me because I only had a 110/100/18 and thought it might be too small for the rear. No problem works great and 80/100/21 for the front for a little extra cushion.

Thats the go - i might try and get the 'stock' michellins next then. Like my previous post, they have around 1300kms on them before the change. Also gunna have a look at Mitas before i make the decision.

In saying that about my Pirellis, my mitchys got 1370kms out of them. I currently have 2000kms on the clock, whichs is 630kms so far. ALOT more dirt riding on them, plus im starting to really flog the bike (as my skills improve) and the tire really doesnt look that bad.

So im all hindsight the XC's are performing well I guess. Will keep updating this as I rack up the kms.

I just mounted a set of Bridgestone m403/404 and with one ride so far I really like them. The woods track we rode was hard snow mixed with just a little (frozen) dirt. The front stuck like glue- did not slip once and the rear did very well also.

I agree.
403/404 combo is best handling tires I have experienced. I have also noticed that the front Bridgestone retains nice light steering without loading up the feel.
Pirelli MX Extras are more resilient and not quite as effective, but are still my tire of choice for high wear rides like the 5 day high country ride which I do once or twice a year here in Australia.

Sam 511, Where do you ride? what state are you in?

South Australia based.

I organise my group of 20 or so riders to get away once a month for 2-3 days at a time usually.
We mainly ride the Mallee areas of South Australia's bushland, on and around private properties that we got to know the owners over the years.
Riverland area or the South East around Lameroo.
Victorian High Country once or twice a year.
Pyrenees mountains just out of Ararat in Victoria once a year.
Beach run through Canunda National Park/Beachport once a year.

We also get access to various properties because of my both my sons racing commitments in the SAORC, and the friendships that develop within that community. Doors open !

Finally settled on the idea that you can't really have the best of both worlds. For the dirt, I mounted up a set of new Dunlop MX31's front and rear. Haven't had a chance to try them out yet due to the snow. For the street: Bought a set of Warp 9's (complete wheel set) and mounted them up with a set of Avon Distanzia's. Got to ride it a bit the other day when the temp got up to about 39 deg. and the snow was off the roads. Very impressed! They look awesome and seem to handle great. Haven't really gotten on the throttle hard as new street tires can be a bit greasy until they've been properly ridden in, but they are 100 x's better than the Enduro III's on the street. The only complaint about the Warp 9's: There is nowhere to drill a hole for the stock speedometer sensor in the front disc, so I had to mount the stock one on the new wheels. Its definitely going to be nice to be able to swap out tires quickly, so I guess if I have to take another 2-3 minutes to swap the front disc from wheel to wheel until I can find a spare its worth it. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Onto Mitas stonekings now only on the rear. went back to another pirelli XC midhard on the front again. Interesting tyre....

Mitas stonekings c-02's have lasted more than 2000km's primarily of on road riding as i have had no car, and they probably still have another 500 + km's in them.... The 'personality' of the tyre has changed alot throughout the running of the tyre though........

Just ordered a new rear for the 511. (my summer tire) I'm a two tire a year guy meaning one for the winter months and one for summer. This is
pertaining to the rear only. I decided to try the IRC VE40 Vulcan Enduro as it just looks wicked for an Intermediate terrain tire. Haven't heard or read
much about this tire. It'll be replacing my M5B, which has become my go to tire for winter soft, muddy terrain.
If anyone has some insight on the Vulcanduro's I'd love to hear about it. If not I'll chime in with a report very soon.

I use the IRC VE-33 Volcanduro ... It's rated a Intermediate tire where the VE-40 is intermediate-hard ... Front VE-35F Volcanduro...

Rear works very well in most all conditions ... Soft, wet, hard, muddy, rock faces ... all terrain ... Very good side knobs action when turning any ... Not a trails tire in the roots and creek rocks but OK ...Just drop the tire pressure to about 15-16LBs and it will hook up most places ... It works OK on the hardtop but it wears quickly there ... Wear is OK if not abused too much on the trails ...

My current one is almost slick yet it still hooks up on the hard-packed stuff .... Front is good... no washing out on me and lasts on the trials ... hard top riding is not so good ...

I'm thinking of getting a knobby knife to keep an edge on my knobs to help traction though-out the life of the tire ...

The VE-40 cost more and might last longer? ..

Thanks Ray Ray. I ordered the size 110/100/18 which I'm hoping will be similar to a 130/80/18. I looked at a comparison chart and that
was the breakdown if memory serves correct. Price was fairly reasonable (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC) and free shipping. Can't beat that.
Should have it tomorrow, put it to the test this weekend on what should be a little bit of everything. Hard rocky to muddy wet to loose dry
roots and ruts and maybe even some snow.

I've come across the same thing. Seems like every time I start leaning towards one tire or another, people are giving great reviews on one website, and horrible reviews on another. Makes it even harder to pick.

Look around and ask around at your local ride areas to what those guys seem to like.

I like Motoz and bridgestones and pirellis. Hate Michelin's.

Has anyone had experience with the Motoz Tractionator Enduro I/T for trail riding with alot of road as well?

On a big bore too??

Thanks.

Noticed that some tires don't come in the size I need. For instance, on a TE449 the stock front is 90/90x21 rear is 140/80x18.

Anyone who's swapped on theirs have a size they prefer over stock that helps handling? Most of the better ones don't get bigger than 120 in the rear and fronts seem more common in 90/100.

Michelin have odd tyre sizing, see if you can find a comparison chart (RMATV has one I think), you would probably want something like a 110/90-18 on a 449
