• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Time For New Drivetrain Parts

I have never heard that evenly-divisible stuff. I would think the spacing remains consistent regardless of number of teeth (because the diameter changes along with it). I hope someone can confirm this either way. As to the front sprocket - I had the sprocket cover off doing some maintenance and I don't think you can get something larger than 15 teeth on there. There's a chain guide (I'm not sure what it's really called) up there that just fits the stock sprocket. I suppose you can grind it down to make room but probably not worth it.
 
You're talking about the case saver. That arcing steel strip that keeps the chain from punching a hole in your engine if the chain separates.

Yes.

I have a 15/45 setup on my TE with the same chain it came with. I have SM wheels that I swap on that have a 42 sprocket, without need to swap chains.

I'm certain I could keep the chain with a 16...if a 16 would fit. It's a close squeeze in there...anybody know for sure, on a 630, not a 610...

Ah, I see. Oh well, gold should look pretty good.

I'm thinking about using a different chain lube this time around. I did get nearly 9000 miles out of an AL sprocket using Belray Superclean, but I've always felt like it was too dry of a lube and didn't really work its way into the links all that well.

I just purchased a 16 tooth counter gear, and all though I have not tried installing it, it looks as if there is no where near enough room for it. My installation stopped when I couldn't remove the master link plate off the chain(removed the safety clip, couldn't force off the plate) I didn't want to damage the chain because I don't have a spare. I suppose I could just remove the rear wheel and try it that way..

Or buy a chain break... i usually just use a couple small flathead screwdrivers and work the plate loose, careful not to damage the o-rings.
 
Ah, chain removal. I can pop the clip off with a pair of pliers. Separating the link is a different story. I have this tool:

I couldn't figure out a way to use it separate the master link without actually pushing the pins completely out of the master link. If anyone can help me out, please do!

What I ended up doing is spinning the wheel around so the master link (with clip removed) is sitting on the rear sprocket. Then I just tapped on the master link pins with a hammer until the link came apart.
 
You have to break the chain to replace the sprocket, even with the wheel off. As said above, you can wiggle that plate off with screwdrivers. To my surprise, the master link on my bike was missing one o-ring. I bought a few spares at the hardware store.

I contacted Motion Pro about a tool to split the master link once the clip is removed. They pointed me at a couple of plates that should work with my chain tool. I ordered some up. I like having the right tool for the job. :)

Supersprox makes all sorts of different colors. Check out their website. He got the chain from somewhere else, though.
 
I did order the sprocket straight from their website. I don't know why but it took like 3 weeks to come in. Can't remember where I bought the chain but google "EK chain colors" and you will find dozens of retailers that carry them.

Well, that's not good news. I need my stuff now! Riding season is running out quickly!
