  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

"This Bike is faster than that Bike"

Lets try to only list the bikes you own now to keep it factual.
This thread can give members a good idea of the comparison between the bikes you have. This could be fun but remember its straight up which one is faster cutting across a field.we can worry about handling later.

I know for a fact that my 87 250 xc is faster than my 85 250 wrx and bring up the rear will be my 79 250 wr.

ill agree with that, the edge between the two single shock bikes is fairly narrow with the 79 in tow. the 85 and 87 have fairly different power deliveries and the 79 has a whole different motor. all 3 capable of a good speed across that field.
i would dare say that if that field was muddy the 79 would be closer to the other two. the 79 has that huge motoplat that works so well when its slippery.

I always like reading the old left kicker pages as it reminds me of my old Maico left kicker days.

This one has left me a bit confused though. I don't have either one of the "3" models you have mentioned. Or maybe that is the fun part?

Sorry I had to respond but to say:

"This could be fun but remember its straight up which is faster cutting across a field" and "That this thread can give members a good idea of the comparison between the two" but you are talking about 3 models of bikes now. So which 2 bikes out of the 87' 250xc, 85' 250wrx, or 79'250wr, are you trying to compare?
hes talking about comparing all 3 bikes he owns

My '86 400 wrx was very fast. But my '79 390cr and my '81 250cr weren't too far behind. But my '78 250or could hang with the 390cr/250cr too.

I would really like to know about the 83 250's,what are they comparable to ? Possibly comparable to the 85 I have ?

ever ridden an 85 CR500, 6 speed
it is an eye opener on the pipe in 6th front wheel light and going past 100
haven't ridden it in years, it will probably bite me
on the 250 comparison, comparing my 87 XC vs. CR, the they CR is more tractable but not faster

Fastest 250 for me, was my friends 81 XC 250 with an aftermarket pipe and answer silencer. Rode it few times the other year and its has crazy power up in the power band and could get by me on my 86 400 ripping threw the gears down a gravel road. My 87 WR is faster than the 83 XC 250 I have by far, the 83 even with a new piston makes the 87 feel like a 300 lol as the 87 250s have great low end and midrange torque and rev out awesome with a better silencer, pulls just like a 400 but rev higher. Fastest bike, the 82 CR 500 which is my fastest Husky to ride so far, and for my #2 is my 75 CR 360 just crazy power with points and all.

I remember my two neighbors got in an argument of which bike were faster. His Husky Cr 250 or the Yamaha YZ 490.
I know his 250 had some porting done, and bigger Mikuni, fox shocks, Ceri forks, etc... On it.
Damn Husky beat the 490 but not by much! I was shocked!
If I had to guess, the Husky was a 79, because he bought an 81 XC 250 then.

My 88 WR430 is as fast as my 87 CR430 was, now that it's ported like the tech bulletin suggests & it's a 6 speed so it may be a tick quicker.

the 85 500 xc was the fastest dirt bike I've owned period. Even faster than my 98 kx500, but the engine vibrated like a golf ball stuck in a blender, so I sold it and kept the kx.

that was funny, true but funny :D
they can be balanced

There were three crankshaft designs for those water cooled 500 bikes. The first was the same as the air cooled but the piston was lighter, the second had a bit more cut off near the holes and big end, the opposite of what I would expect for a lighter piston, and the third one had kind of a triangle shape near the big end but the lube hole was omitted.

As to the original question. The 430 auto really hooks up and moves out but when put on a sandy hill does not do as well as the 430 six speed. For those who have not had a look at the insides of a 430 auto crank compared to a standard shift one, the crank cheeks are narrower, have much less percentage of a full disc and might even be smaller overall diameter.

I think my standard shift water cooled 430 with my custom pipe is the fastest I have. To go real fast notice how the wind screen fairings are under rocket bikes.

i'm with you on the modified 430, have the porting and UpTite pipe on my 430, but the 500 is geared different and pulls deeper and harder
my brother had a ported 500 that was way over the top
