• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Tell me about your camera!

Coffee

What do you have?

I've got a 6MB Nikon D50 SLR that has a max resolution of 3008 x 2000 pixels.

While it is a general question, I'm also trying to fine tune the picture attachments on CH so if you could say what the file size and resolution are that would be great :)

(hover mouse over picture file name and that should pop up)

For taking pictures when I ride, I have an Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. It was more than I wanted to spend, but my first "riding" camera (HP) didn't even last a year, a sandstorm out in the desert thrashed it. I don't get to ride as often as I like, and when I get the chance to do a truly unique ride (like to the grand canyon), I don't want to have to worry about my camera failing because it got wet or dirty.

This one is shockproof, crushproof, freezeproof, dustproof and waterproof, so when I crash or drop it taking a picture with gloves on, I know it is going to be ok. It doesn't take the quality of pictures that a good SLR is going to take, but it is compact and rugged.

It is easy to operate with gloves on, and I can recommend it. Ken

I use a Canon 30D, I have a 50mm lens, a 100-400L Lens and a 17-40L.

I love it, ya its a few models old, but it still takes great shots. Theres so much to learn with photography, Ive just scratched the surface!

Max resolution is 3504x2336, I usually upload to photobucket for my so so shots and save Flickr for the better shots. Photobucket is nice for the web as it automatically resizes and downgrades the quality for web viewing.

Heres a few shots from it:

I use the lowly and outdated Kodak 613. Okay picture quality for a cheap little lens. It's small, uses AA lithium batteries, has been dropped in the dirt and rocks on several occasions and run over once by a bike, also been rained on a few times. It's still working after two years. I sometimes use a Kodak 1465, or if I'm not bouncing around on the trail, a Nikon D40.

I use a lowly Kodak as well, after my Cannon Power Shot blew out of my tank bag somewhere in Eastern Oregon. The Kodaks lens cover doesn't open all the way sometimes when I turn it on. I need to help it with a finger nail. Not a sign of proper care I guess.

I have a Nikon D90 with a few lens. A VR18-105, 70-300 and a fixed 50/1.8f. The remote flash is also an awsome extra (SB600).

For Stills...
Canon 20D
Olympus Stylus 720SW..can't kill it
Olympus Stylus Tough 8000...can't kill it II
iPhone 3G..not kidding
Canon AE-1 35mm

For the trails and a very durable camera:

Olympus Stylus 720 7 MP about 3.5 MB per picture

For pics with the DSLR:

Sony A350 14.5 MP about 10 mB per picture

Testing for Coffee:

Pic was 4.5 Mb, took a while to convert but it did it.

Has manual stuff but I haven't dedicated the time to messing with it much yet. Mainly wanted manual for the night shots, to get the stars. I mostly just use the auto, it does a pretty good job.

No postwork, just scaled down to 1024px × 576px, 444.17 KB, using Gimp.

I'm not paying for your bandwidth, but IMO 97.7 KB is a pretty small file size limit for pics. I realized I could have cranked down the compression setting but I'm lazy and if I go too far the artifacts start to get annoying. It's kinda pointless given all the fast free image hosts, though admittedly I host on my companies domain.

The Camera I use when riding to snap a few quick pictures is Olympus
Stylus 850 SW.
olympus_stylus_850_sw.jpg

It is shock proof 5 ft.drop test, water proof 10 ft. (kids take some pretty neat under water pictures), Cold weather down to 14F. It has a huge LCD that works good in the sun light, but does not have a view finder. Pretty hard to use with your helmet on anyway.
It also comes with digital image stabilization the helps with a shaky hand.
It takes 8 meg picture which is good enough for trail riding.

i use my n95 (5mp) phone for on ride pics as its small but take other stuff with a sony a200... 10mp... dont know the techy stuff sorry but have a great time playing with the SLR , totally differnet game from phones...but you expect that hey ?

It is a small file size, but has been upped to 125kb. Now some jpgs should be much better viewed eg they will show up much larger now due to that change, there is no dimensional limits, just the file size limit.

Every single picture is a relatively large load on the server. 125kb is a lot of characters in a post... in fact 1 picture could be the equivalent of adding a certain number of posts, maybe 100 posts, maybe 1000 posts.... which will slow down access time for everyone.

The intent was not to use the attachments as a substitute for a image server/hosting account like smugmug or photobucket - it is intended for people to use if they do not know how to use those types of services. Some incredibly awesome people are on CH but computers are not their strong point.

I've changed the attachment software and it seems to be working much better - before it would give an error if the picture was too big. In fact an avatar can now be a full size picture and it should be automatically scaled down... probably not as good as a photo editing program, but it should at least function.

Feel free to try attaching large unscaled native pics to a post in this thread.

Like these for instance:

My small trail ride camera is:
Canon A590 IS, 8.0MP, 4X optical zoom:

....but crap just noticed I've been taking pics over the last 3mths set at down at 5M (2592 x 1944), file size from 1.9MB to 2.4MB.

Back early spring, I reduced size for a small mem card I had to use one weekend, apparently never set it back to full 8M (3264 x 2448) where looks like file size rans 2.8MB - 4.0MB
Guess it's time I go back thru all my settings
