• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE630 HID conversion

alpha26

Husqvarna
AA Class
I am thinking of converting to HID headlight for my TE630. Would standard H4 type HID conversion kit fit? Anyone had positive or negative experience? Can anyone recomnend a website or store for purchase.

Some thoughts,

The housing would have to be able to take the higher temperatures.
The harness would have to be able to handle the increased amps drawn.
The unit would have to be the type with a shutter/moving bulb so you wouldn't blind everyone on the road on low beam.

I've considered it too, but you usually get what you pay for, and there's an abundance of $50 kits out there, but I don't think I'm going to be the guinea pig on this one:p

the thing is with heat and amps drawn, if you replace the 55/60w halogen with a 55w HID, the amps drawn is going to be the same (P=VI) and also there theoretically shouldn't be more heat, as if it draws the same wattage but produces more light, there should be less energy wasted as heat.
I've seen a HID kit with a Hi/Lo function using a solenoid, i don't know how well that would work, but the only other option would be to have two bulbs or lenses

hi new to this forum thing,as an auto electrician ive found a guy in sydney{emsusa.com.au} who specialised in motorcycle hid where the ballasts are smaller, therfore easier to mount, also most kits ive fitted to vehicles have been 35w so, low in current draw.most people use 6000k personally i like 4200k. have fitted lynx fairing & decided to busy there to install hids for now anyway hope this helps. btw like your choice of bikes

Yeah be careful as plenty of bad HID conversion kits out there. The write up for this one seems pretty good but still I'm not convinced enough to try. I am adding a couple of the 10W LED aux lights soon though. Mostly for off road and safety (see me) reasons though. Stock lamp is actually quite good IMO. I've done a couple dusk to dawn all night rides and never felt too compromised for lighting.

I have fitted a HID to the 630 light - no problems. Is a H4 kit that retracts/tilts to dip beam. It is a 6000k and only draws 30w. It definately does not run as hot as a brighter standard H4 (I tried one and was worried it would melt the lens). I bought a motorcycle unit with a small ballast that I mounted it behind and to the side of screen. Will try and shoot a pic tomorrow.

What was the particular brand? I'd be interested in side-by-side pics if you took some...

Most of my riding mates have KTM 640 Adventure with HID headlights, plus twin high power aux LED lights. I didn't want to add extra aux LED lights, as it will draw more power, and add more cable & weight.

So I have decided to bite the bullet and ordered a H4-3 type HID conversion kit from EBay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221015436842?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It is 55W type 4300K colour, so it draws same amount of power off the battery.

I also plan to replace the park light with more powerful CREE Q5 LED from EBay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280834699303?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Will report my results once installed.

I have trouble getting on the emsusa site. So I got my kit from EBay instead.

I bought the F800GS and went on a solo outback trip for 4 weeks, then followed by a 7 weeks trip to WA/NT with my mate. I found it far too heavy for the loose sand, and hence bought the Husky. I love the Husky, it performs like a 450cc enduro bike offroad, and a supermotard on road. The BMW feels like a heavy road bike now. I also got a Ducati multistrada 1000DS for road use.

I've used these guys in the past for other projects, but not for the Husky. They're in San Diego, and their customer service leaves a little something to be desired, but tough to beat for the price.

They sell a Moto kit for about $40. Small ballasts, lifetime warranty, and High/Low option. 35w are the traditional HIDs, 55w are even brighter. Per their site a halogen bulb emits 1200 lumens, 35w HID 3400 lumens and a 55w at 5000 lumens.

Would this work with the 610 light?

The problem with the 610 light is the reflector is small pathetic quality. Best thing initially IMHO is to fit a 630 light or other aftermarket unit with a better light reflector unit - at least then if you upgrade to HID you are getting maximum benefit from the emitted light.

will not work with the 610 light as far as I know. Most of their kits are retrofit kits for a halogen style automotive bulb, and I remember the 610 bulb as an oversized globe looking bulb.

My HID conversion is a failure! While the HID kit itself connect to the standard wiring, and put out excellent light. I have the following problems:

1) The end of the HID bulb fitting is different from stock:

HID_2.jpg

While the HID bulb will go into the light housing, it sticks out too much at the back, and the waterproof ruber boot will not fit over it. Here is how it looks with standard bulb:

HID_1.jpg

The horizontal wiring loom at the back of the headlight has to be moved - to make way for the longer HID light that extends out to the back. The headlight assembly can then be remounted.

So unless I can find a longer waterproof rubber boot to cover entire end of the HID Bulb, the conversion can't go ahead as it will not be waterproof.

My plan to replace the park light with more powerful CREE Q5 LED also end in failure, as the LED is 15mm wide - too big to fit in the hole of park light.

Well many thanks for being the guinea pig and saving us from the frustration! Wish someone would come out with a 630 HID kit.

:)

Lynx and TrailTech both make a headlight/fairing with an HID option. It's not cheap, but it's an alternative.
