    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Fuel Octane: I notice that the service manual specifies "98 Octane" for this bike. I assume this is RON. Problem is that the best I can normally hope for is 95RON or less... Hurrah for octane boosters.

Question is what are peoples experiences as far as the minimum fuel octane (without a booster) in these bikes? Also, what mods (eg exhaust, EGO removal) are associated with those experiences?
 
I can get extra premium here. Don´t intend to use anything with ethanol in my 630 (pu kit and sensor disconnected). I once ruined a small Continental 65 aircraft engine using bio-MOGAS. Never again!
 
Thanks for the reply. What I am looking for is experiences with minimum fuel octane. ie What is the lowest grade of fuel people have run for an extended period without melting their engine?

Fortunately ethanol fuels are very rare out my way.
 
I just put the highest RON fuel they have in it. Have run it on 91 for a tank and couldn't really tell the difference (Maybe a bit of bottom end surging, but my bike spends bugger all time in the bottom end). You take what you have to take :excuseme:

Thank you. That is the sort of thing I am after. Was the bike stock or running the PU modification?

Anyone else had similar or bad experiences with 91RON or the US grade 87AKI?

EDIT: Well, I think 91RON = 87AKI. Standard grades in the US are 87, 89, 91?
 
Stock. Australian 630's come set up to run in full power mode with the o2 sensor in place. So there is no point in putting in a PU kit in an aussie 630.
We don't have cat's in our can's either :thumbsup:
 
I really think 95 is OK for the 630. I have used it in my 510 and 450 in the past and no difference what so ever.
 
Here, they have 87, 89 w/10% Ethanol, and 91 octanes. It's probably a different scale than you folks use. I have run the 87 and 91 without problems. I avoid the Ethanol blends.

Sorry, forgot you're in Oz. The question is more relevant to the US riders. Mixture enrichment of the PU mod will make a difference to anti-knock.

It pleases me that we don't have to go through the hassle (I reckon it is small) of our US cousins to get these bikes to run... while maintaining the benefit of the EGO sensor or is that missing too?
One of the things that concerned me about the PU mod dropping the computer onto the base map without EGO closed loop support and hurting fuel consumption cruising at low to moderate loads.

This brings me to another question. What sort of fuel consumption do you guys get from the 630 steady state at say 110kph/70mph on the highway? Assuming that you can keep the right hand under control.

I didn´t buy it (630SM) to save on fuel. It uses approx. 7 litres/100kms. And it´s no use ... I can´t keep my right hand under control. That´s why I bought it (sensor disconnected pu kit and Arrow zorst)
 
:excuseme: No idea about hwy fuel consumption. I can tell you that I use 5l per 100km on muddy dirt roads with a bit of hwy. But that will change as the bike breaks in. And that wasn't riding steady. I recon you can count on 230km from a tank.
 
Driving somewhat sane .. 200-230k's on 10L before the reserve lights comes . Hammer hard ....as little as 180k's, still great for a 600cc thumper!

Thanks guys. I had a look around and 22-26km/l seems to be the range of numbers for highway riding at sane speeds. Constant highway speeds are usually a fairly good indicator of how frugal a bike can be. Hard ridden off road or just hard conditions can be even more telling.

OD, fuel consumption matters when living in an area the size of Germany with only a handful of places to get fuel. There are a lot of places where 700km in hard conditions with a safety margin is required. Any increase in consumption needs to be proportionally offset by an increase in tank capacity... and weight carried. Add a couple of days of water and the weight starts to add up very quickly.
Even your numbers are of value because they demonstrate what the bike is capable of when ridden hard. Of course I'll have my own numbers before getting into anything heavy. I just wanted an idea.

Can you expand on that about Aussie 630's being in "full power mode" with the 02 sensor installed ? Can you tell us what and from who, have you been advised about that ? :confused:

Also, some time ago I mentioned my dealer advised Aus 630's did not have Cats fitted. (this was before delivery) Later he corrected to it being a different type of cat to what the 610 had. (I believe now the 630 cats are deep inside the 2 cans and would require surgery to remove).

Correct! You can´t really see it in the pic .... but it´s right down inside there. And I can´t see any way of getting it out without causing damage. Couldn´t find a cat in the twin Arrows though.

My dealer gave me a print out from the importer. No cat's and full power mode out the box. There is also revision for a de-tuned version in the future (cam on the throttle) I have to admit mine is about the loudest stock bike I have ever owned. :thumbsup:

I suppose one way to check would be after work I could post any numbers on the cam's.
 
I'd expect a different ignition/fuel map to the US and EU with our loose emissions requirements on bikes... if they are different.

There is also a version of the bike on the lams list. By my reckoning it would have to be detuned slightly.
