• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi everyone. Im looking at buying a te610 but have the option of two. Both are year 2000 models but one has the electric start and the other is left kick start only. Both are supermoto conversions and will only be used on the road for fun blasts about the local lanes with at most 10 or 20 miles on 70mph roads and the odd back road 15 mile commute to work.
I wondered if it would be possible to get any opinions on which bike is better suited. I've read a few things about the kickstart models being originally competition use only and never intended for road use, as well as being difficult to start and are more maintenance/service intensive. For these reasons alone should I be favouring the e starter or are they pretty much the same bike?
Many thanks

Around that model year there were changes to the oiling system; I don't know exactly when and on what models, but perhaps somebody here does. The older stuff was fed via the cam chain, whereas the newer stuff got a pressurized oil system.

I don't know if the 610 and the 610E were split on that or not in 2000, but it's worth looking into. Check the oil capacity as well.

My brother has a 2000 410 (non-E), it's left kick and "passive" lubrication system, with only about a quart oil capacity. For an older bike, it gets down the trail really well, it feels WAY smaller than my 2006 TE610 with e-start.

Thats really not a lot of oil! The most I would probably ride would be 100 miles maybe once or twice a year. The rest of the time would just be for fun, would oil be an issue for me?

Lots of the newer "race" bikes (like the TXC 250/310) have small oil capacities as well, so it's not uncommon. You just need to be more diligent about making sure it's full and changing it more often.

What I would recommend is checking the specs on both bikes to see if they have the same capacity. There were some variances between the "E" and "non-E" bikes in that year range, and sometimes one of them was oil capacity.

The below site has some info on the older models. Seems to suggest only an E model in 2000, although it may not be a comprehensive record.

The original 610 of the early 1990s was a more hard core dirt/enduro bike than the later ones, which made a few more concessions to some on road capability, but with that came quite a deal of additional weight. I actually posted a thread on it here:

I don't know when this change occurred, and consequently whether your comparison may be between this older style more hard core bike & the more all-rounder version.

About a year ago I came across a guy in the Watagans forest who had a 1990s 610. After about the 6th kick on the old left kicker I'm sure he'd have jumped at an electric leg. But it sure sounded meaty when it finally kicked over, & he seemed very happy with it.

Good luck with your decision.
