  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE511 rides 2 (dualsport) and 3 (single track)

that one is the standard (non HD) gopro wide. the HD takes much better vids and there is a cheaper one out now. See Jake Meteers vids on this site for the HD type ones.

What gearing are you running? Stock?

I just pulled all the street legal stuff off my TE449 tonight and am wondering if I should drop a tooth on the c/s.

I wouldn't drop down a tooth if you have plans of doing any 60mph+ use, otherwise a 14 tooth is ok up to 58-60mph cruise speed.

I found my gearing about perfect for gnarly single track to 55 mph. I am gearing mine up via a rear sprocket so I can cruz at 60 MPH EZ as i will use it more for DS and it will still do regular single track fine. Still loving this bike. It has stayed VERY tight unlike some previous huskys and has needed nothing to enjoy. No battery tie down fix, no loose sub frame bolts, no erratic EFI, Put the key in and ride.

Mine will see little to zero pavement running. Only time it will be on the road will be to connect some trails.

I have heard that 14/51 seems to be the ticket for off-roading on the 449s.

i run standard c/s on my 449 and ride some crappy snotty tight rocky trails, and as yet its good i spent a lot of time on my 08 te as it was geared all wrong but the 449 is good as it is.

Spec sheets show them geared almost identical out of the box on overall ratios. Some minor differences with 2nd and 3rd but 1st and 6th are mirror images. Are you sure? (11 TE449 vs 08/10 TE450)

Wow! Thought your TXC250 was perfect?

Wow Norman! Nice post. Way to piss on somebody's new bike parade...
Not pissing on his new bike, I hope he loves it. I just thought Kelly said EFI worked perfect on his TXC250 and now he says his prior Husky EFI was "erratic". I'm just confused not pissing. It sounds like Kelly is pissing on his previous Huskys....

looking at the spec it states 14/50 but there is other options on the list ?but mine came with 13 /44 or 48 or somthing like that so i changed it to 14/50 wich i prefer

Awesome write up K as usual. I was hoping the new Husky's would be good bikes and it sounds like they are great bikes. I liked the videos also.

Norm, I really liked the light weight feel, the motor after about 1/4 throttle and the handling of the 2010 TXC250 I had. As you might have noticed i bought iBeat, tried all sorts of stuff, did the reflash, tried setting the TPS, spoke with Joe and Tim about stuff did a bunch of things, not unlike the sorting i had to do with my WR125/144 which I also love. Both those bikes (WR125/TXC250) there were many great things about and were / are very good bikes. The fact remains that the TXC battery ejected into the filter, a known issue, the EFI was never perfect even after spending good money trying to fix it, sprocket bolts and sub frame bolts loosened which is typical for these models (all of which I posted about). I still loved the bike as it was fun, fast as I needed, handled GREAT and feels super light for a 4st. As I had ridden the Bergs I had a taste of PERFECT EFI and now I own one (perfect EFI) I know the EFI can be and is much better in every way than the Mikuni stuff. IMHO ALL huskys should come with Keihn EFI, which i have said over and over since trying the Bergs. That i like the new platform a lot should not be a knock on husky it is appreciation for going to a far superior EFI system and building a unique bike that works very well. The lack of engine braking on the new motor with the perfect EFI simply makes it a joy to use right out of the box with NO fiddling at all. The engine package is pure gravy to me. Much like i loved the performance of the Berg FR390 this motor rules. The lack of engine braking and the smoothness makes it better than the Berg motor which I rated near the top of any 4st I had ridden. My points about the build quality seem founded as well as there is a thread on TT talking about just this. I am in no way pissing on previous huskys. I loved those bikes. But the fact remains that the new bike and maybe all the 2011 models seem to be built a little better and to a higher standard. I bought my TE511 choosing that model because it was a complete unknown and figured at the least it would be a quirky kinda fat ill turning DS bike which would be manageable. At the best it would be non of those things. Fortunately the bike fits me like a glove and I have has ZERO issues with anything loosening up or needing attention other than the shifter got loose after about 130 miles. The bike has been "stick the key in an enjoy". That was my point, not pissing on old models but praising the new one for fixing some known issues and moving forward. In the end the new bike is far better than I thought it would be. It also has a fun factor nearing the 125's which is hard to do. The lively motor and no engine braking make it so fun to squirt around on, jump off stuff and wheelie all over.

Similar situation is when I had my new 04 TE450. loved that bike and put a lot of miles on it. When the 08 came out with the new frame and suspension I got one (08 TXC450) and while I loved my old 04 this 08 was IMHO a huge step forward in suspension and handling. Does this mean I hate the old bike, absolutely not, it means things are moving forward.

Gearing feels a lot like my 08 TXC450. Great for off road but could be wider for street. I am gearing mine up some for DS work.

Good for you! I just thought when Tim was having some EFI problems, you said yours was running well. I misunderstood then. Enjoy your "Hot New Date"......

Mine ran good but far from how the Keihn stuff works. Tim had a much worse bog / hesitation than I did. They seem to be all over the map. I said "erratic" not horrible or unridable. I have not spent a penny or a second on the EFI on the new bike and it runs perfect.

Rode a demo TE510 last year. Had a lot of fun on it. Couldn't help noticing the hot exhaust, though. Does the new design keep the heat away from your right leg at all?
