  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE510 will just not start!!

A Class
Alright, so this is my first post to this forum and i have found myself stuck.

I recently purchased a 2006 Te510.
I was told the bike had a flat battery and jump started it off the car and it started and ran fine, so i replaced the battery and all was good (still had to charge it but i was riding that afternoon and drain it from starting it to check the battery :applause:)
Got out to a riding spot, started the bike up off the jumper leads, did a quick lap, bike stalled and then after trying and trying to kickstart it and jump starting it, it would turn over with no start, or the Electric starter relay would click.

Got it home and all it would do was click,
Jumped it with screw driver still only turning over so i replace the solenoid and then went over every connection cleaning all ports and the took apart starter motor and cleaned it all up.

Still no start

Then decided to start from the beginning.
Fresh fuel and fuel running into carby
Cleaned Carby and all the jets
Put it all back together with a fully charged battery.
Replaced spark plug and there was spark and the in full getting in there as the plug was slightly
wet

Still no start
:banghead:

Now, before i got and spend a zillion dollars to fix it, has anyone had a problem similar to this or is there anything i have missed and or check that may be wrong..

How many miles on bike?
Need picture of plug when it's wet.
What does coolant look like?
What does engine oil look like?

When you pull the plug and it's wet, spray it with ether, (starting fluid, or dunk it in some alcohol gas treatment), put it back in and try to start it.

Have you checked the clutch safety switch? The little button that screws into the clutch perch?

You might start tracing your wiring harness for broken or rubbed wires.

Not 100% on miles but has around 70 hours

This is the plug, its not dripping wet but there is fuel there.

Coolant is fine, plenty and its still nice and green.

Oil is fine and clear and when i serviced it was still the same..

No i haven't check that Phoenix, not sure what that is haha

Here's a pic. It may not be the culprit here, but it will keep the bike from starting if it has wiggled out or is damaged.

When i use the e-start it turns over fine just doesn't start, no clicking changed the soleniod

Today i checked all the timing chain, valves etc
The exhaust cams were just out of spec, could this cause the problem?

as inspired from OHR: was compression part of the etc?
Exhaust cam lash adj. can absolutely cause hard/no start issues, define "just out of spec"? for some feedback... guessing they are tight?

I have the bike at a mechanic and he confirmed that they were enough in spec to be find.

He suggested that the ignition system could be the problem, to do with the cdi.

Could this cause the problem ?

Exhaust were only 0.05mm out

Valve clearance with cold engine
INLET.................................................................................. 0.004-0.006 in.
EXHAUST........................................................................... 0.006-0.008 in.

.05mm off is close to .002" so, if he means from .006" then yours are at .004", if he means from .008" then .010"?
So they were .05 mm (.0019685) too tight or .05 mm (.0019685 in) too loose= again guessing that they were tight actual measurement by your mechanic was something like .004" my guess is that this would have a impact- I would not call this "just out of spec" if it were my bike and I'd adjust them whether the cause to your problems or not. Shims cost less then a dollar a piece and are 2 minutes more work than just checking clearance, so I don't get a mechanic saying: Close Enough.

wait for others to chime in on this for opinions.
I'd have your mechanic do a compression check (the exhaust valve clearance being tight can cause low comp)

CDI's are pretty stable- you have spark you said so I wouldn't guess its the cause. But your mechanic is actually looking at your bike.

Best of luck

Ok cool, thanks for the input has helped a lot

Did the shims this afternoon still no start :(

Think I'm going to be chasing a problem with the stator so I'll check all that tomorrow

Not happy as I'm going away for the week riding though :(

So, thought I'd break the new wallet in and took it to a new mechanic.
(Last one was hopeless)
After having them stuck for a few days they finally got information they need to have a further look (which was not an easy task to get off husky) they found the problem

A bolt in the flywheel had sheared off and was just allowing the motor to spin freely

Anyone had this happen before?

Dunno. I certainly do not think it is a common issue though. On the other hand the bikes are getting a bit old, and we are starting to see things go wrong as the bikes age. I am watching these things with great interest because I have a 2006 TE250 which is very similar to your bike.
