  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE510 highway questions

I have a '07 TE510. The offroad riding areas near me are becoming more rare and I see the possibility that I may have to ride more highway to get to them than I thought when I bought the bike. How well do these bikes hold up if ridden say, 2.5 hours at 60mph? I have read the 2 extremes, that it will grenade due to maintaining the same rpm for too long or that it will go forever and just needs to have more frequent oil changes than some of the more street oriented duelies. Anyone with any experience to offer with this? Thanks.

It won't grenade, as long as you are careful about oil changes and maintenance. I had an 07 510 which I sold with 24,000 km on the clock, mostly road (work commuter).

Currently have 2010 TE 510 with 9,000 km on clock, again mostly road.

Won't be very comfy, however. 2.5 hrs on highway is a pretty long time on that bike.

I got a hitch carrier for my jeep cherokee, photo second or third in this thread:

Good luck!

As a matter of interest, how did you go on valve clearances and needing to reshim with thos bikes? And what sort of intervals did you service at (either hrs or km's)?

I sold my 08 TE510 with just over 8000 miles and 300 hours. Never once required a valve lash adjustment since new.. were always in spec, however the intakes were just getting on the tight end of the range.

You will go through tires quickly and you may want to upgrade the seat and a larger tank.

Changed oil at 500 to 800 depending on amount of dirt use and always changed the air filter out with a clean freshly oiled filter after every ride in the dirt.

Thanks. Were you guys who ran a bit more roadwork using the stock gearing or did you switch it up for something else to keep the rev's down?

Thanks for the input. I was afraid that I may have to get rid of this bike to get something that could handle the highway for a bit but wouldn't be able to handle the offroad that I would throw at it. The TE has been a great bike so far. With the 15/47, first gear is still OK for reasonably tight single track?

I'm running 14/47 and that depends on what you mean by reasonably tight. I think for USA Northeast reagon, New Jersey tight IMO, no 15/47 is no good for what we call stick farm tight, infact I don't feel that 14/47 is good but then the amount or distance of the tight would determine that. I recently did a short section of reasonably "tight" woods at the Hammer Run dualsport and was hating that 14/47 gearing coming out the other end.

I ran 50 miles of this trail with a 15/45 and many other atv trails.. wasn't easy but I was on a 600 mile two day ride. Not really single track but had many land mines (boulders) hiding under the muddy water and required allot of technical skills. I much prefer a 15/47 unless you will be doing allot of 75 mph stuff. Single track, not in the mountains, a 14/47 was my favorite.

OOOOooo, that's soupy.

You guys are talking me into getting the sprockets and giving this a go. I plan to order the sprockets, chain, a Clarke tank and a couple other things during the winter. I already have the soft bags. Thanks again.

ensure you offset the rim locks with about 2.5 to 3oz of weight for smoothness on the pavement.

The 510 engine really starts to sing and build power from 6K up. Knowing this I tried to keep the engine below 6K while on boring pavement sections. 6K RPM with the 15/47 should put you just under 70 mph if I remember right..

Hey Arctra -

It never needed any valve clearance adjustments. I changed oil every 1500 km, oil and filter at 3,000, checked valves once each year or so.

Lots of trouble with the clutch control system and rads, but never any trouble with the engine (on the 24000 km bike)
