  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 Used Oil Analysis

I have no dog in this fight.....a die hard 2 stroke guy....but this thread is really good reading. As a guy who manages a fleet of big rigs oil analysis is a tool we use to keep tabs on our 15 liter motors!

Thanks for sharing the info as it relates to two wheels and not 18!

I'm not sure if I see the value in this.

After over twenty years in the trucking industry as a small fleet owner/operator, I've found that oil analysis is vital to the small business person looking to purchase a used semi-truck tractor. The results, compared to established norms, are invaluable to the decision to purchase a particular unit. The presence/quantity of various metals, along with fuel and coolant levels give the buyer a great idea of what they are getting. Combine an oil analysis with a dynto test, and the decision to buy a truck almost becomes simple.

For the TE449, I guess the analysis can satisfy some curiosity, and promote a bit of online debate, but even the lab admits their lack of normative figures and recommends an extended oil-change interval, which is based more on their true market, industrial engines, than that of a small dirt bike.

Considering how little oil capacity our engines have, combined with the limited miles they run, I see the analysis as purely academic. While interesting to see and, perhaps, debate, I think simply running a good oil and changing it regularly would serve most folks quite well.

YMMV.

It's interesting how microscopic shrapnel in oil can affect the engine. I don't mind changing oil frequently - it's disposing that oil in the correct place is what is difficult and everyone needs to be weary of.

Put it in an empty milk jug and toss it in a dumpster or your neighbor's garbage can when he 'aint lookin'.

Most auto parts stores will take it. When I get about 5 Gal. or so of used oil I just drop if off at Autozone around the corner and tell them keep the $. I think they
still pay you for it ??

I have a question, how long can oil site in a smaller engine (250cc-450cc) before causing harm? I store my TE250 inside but lately been real busy. And I also have another bike.

I will take the TE250 every 2-3 weeks and only ride 30 or so miles of on and off road. Should I worry at all with the oil sitting in engine for those longer periods of times not being used? Is it doing any harm? Synthetic oil rotella t6..

Get it tested man

I have run mine after sitting for a year before. Might not be the best thing for the bike but I live in a dry climate and oil lasts forever in the right conditions as long as the elements stay out of it. I think it is recommended every six months regardless of the miles you have on it so says the oil changing industry. I came across a cbr250 and ninja 250 comparison and was shocked at the 12,000 mile oil change interval or something ridiculous like that the cbr had. Just depends who is the expert saying it I guess .

I'd change it every three months or every 8 hours, whichever comes first.

Alright thanks. Not really sure where to test it and don't know if I really care, I kind of have given up on this bike.. Thanks for the responses
