  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Te449 oil filter screen

Looks like my oil screen has a small hole in it and would like to replace it. My searches have been fruitless. Any idea where I can purchase a new oil filter screen. Thanks

The pair of OEM filter strainer screens are only available as a set with the center case gasket.

I get my parts from "BikeBandit" for the BMW G450X.

They list this: "Gasket set for center housing" Part #11117715426, price is $51.33.

They have always come through with any parts needed for me in the past much faster than any backordered parts from the dealer and a few bucks cheaper as well.

Greetings. If anyone has one of those screen filters out, if you're willing, would you please measure one of the O-rings, and post that information here? I have been able to get all the sizes for the main filter cap, filler cap, and the two screen filter caps, but forgot about the two screen filters. I would like to replace all the O-rings, but I don't need new screens, and I really don't want to pay ten bucks for one part. I just did an oil change, and would prefer to have the new parts at the ready for the next one, vs. having to pause while I measure them, then pursue those items. I have multiple parts on order, which should be here before the next change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trenchcoat:

I gather you mean the O-ring sizes. They are:

Main oil filter cap - 43 mm inside diameter (I.D.), 2 mm cross-section thickness (C.S.)

Screen filters - 18 mm I.D., 2 mm C.S.

Filler cap - 21.5 (!) mm I.D., 2 mm C.S.

Related to the foregoing, I have a ZipTyRacing aluminum, magnetic oil filler cap with a 1/4" square hole for a ratchet. Second time removing it, the hole stripped out. Got it off with a hammer and screwdriver as a punch. Spent two days trying to get all the stupid thread sizes and pitches for everything. Finally got them all:

Filler cap - M24 x 2

Screen filter caps - M20 x 1.5

Drain plug - M16 x 1.5

Found a 43 O-ring on eBay for about $ 13.00 CDN. Got ten for 88 cents from China. This is why I wanted the dimensions, so I could find cheaper ones.

Found magnetic, aluminum replacement drain, filler, and screen plugs for about $ 20.00 CDN total from AliExpress. Still have original main oil filter cover, if needed. Haven't found or looked very hard for main filter cover thread specs.

Regarding the square hole stripping out, at the end of the equation, one LB.-FT. of torque on that hole results in about 17 lbs. of force on each corner of the ratchet male end. If you torqued it up to ten lbs.-ft., that's 170 lbs. per corner. I think it might not be appropriate to have too small a hole in aluminum for this reason, due to its softness. For a given torque, a larger hole would have less force at the corners because it would have more leverage.
