  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 fork oil

Thanks, did you find this in the book? I cant find a reference

This is straight from the owners manual.

FORK OIL LEVEL
For regular fork operation, both legs must be provided with the necessary oil quantity.
TE: Remove the fork legs from the fork to check the oil level. Work as follows:
- remove the damper rod caps;
- remove springs from the legs letting the oil drain into the legs;
- bring fork to stroke end;
- TE: check that level is at the distance (A) of 123 mm (4.84 in.) from rod upper limit.

OIL QUANTITY IN EACH FORK LEG
- TC - TXC: 556 cu.cm (34.54 cu.in)
Cartridge: 186 cu.cm (11.35 cu.in)
Fork sleeve: 370 cu.cm (22.58 cu.in)
- TE: 660 cu.cm (40.27 cu.in)

Interesting, I found the reference Sam refers to in the OM. The maintenance manual on pg I.45 disagrees though, it wants 725cm3. This is the overhaul section of the book so is it safe to assume that in the OH condition we need more oil?

One can only speculate and assume that a total overhaul needs more oil than, perhaps, just an oil change. :thinking:
In any case I always go by air chamber length after I purge the air out. Air purging takes about 30-40 full length strokes of the inner shaft till no more air is heard escaping.
My air chamber length is set at 120mm with no spring and collapsed fork.

Many ways to skin this cat. I like the height level method as well, I bought the Tusk adjuster to make it stupid proof. :rolleyes:
I was setting up my bike today and noted that it came with other than factory settings on the clickers. They were off by as much as seven ckicks and neither fork was set the same. I suggest checking against specs before making any adjustments. Ill set oil levels this week and readjust from there.

Absolutely.
Do not assume for 1 second that everything is as it is supposed to be on any bike.
Dealer pre delivery is basically assembly (usually by young apprentices), look over and fluids where required. Thats it.
