  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 Exhaust Cam/Tappet Wear

I’m doing a head-gasket replacement on a ‘13 TE449 w/900 miles that I recently purchased which I will explain the details on in another thread. I have a question though regarding the exhaust cam/tappet. The picture below shows one of the exhaust tappets/buckets that I found to have some very strange wear. This is the valve that is on the same side as the camshaft compression release. It has also started to cause a little bit of wear on the cam lobe. The surface of the tappet is rough to the touch and would have definitely torn up the cam even more if the engine hadn't been opened up. I ordered a new tappet and the cam is on back-order. Has anyone experienced this type of wear? Is this wear pattern related to the compression release? Is this normal?

All my tappets looked smooth as a baby's bottom at 2k miles. I would replace those immediately and keep a close eye on what may be causing the wear.

Must have gone tight on you. That's one for somebody like Tinken to answer. I think he's seen the inside of more 449/511 motors than a Kymco engineer.

Thanks for the info, it has a strange looking wear pattern almost like the tappet may have had a poor surface finish from the factory.

I'd ask why are replacing the head gasket? What was the valve clearance on that particular valve? Coolant in the oil will eat up bearings. Also that might be the end of the line for oil circulation through the top end. Possible oil starvation. Also, Ive replaced 449/511 heads from getting so hot they warped the valve seats and lost compression. Id give that head a thorough inspection. If the bucket is stuck, the heads junk.
