  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE310 FAIL w/ killswitch

Ashley James

Husqvarna
I own a TE310 2012 model, within the first few months of owning it I had 2 fuel pumps replaced under warranty within weeks of each other and have not had issues since.

My bike has just recently started backfiring; I replaced the spark plug about a month back. The plug appears fine, it's in new condition and the spacing is 8mm (within tolerance of 7-8mm according to manual). I've just finished pulling it to bits and checking the ECU and spark plug for faults and neither appear to be causing backfire issues, however after putting the bike back together it's displaying the notorious FAIL on the instrument panel.

The fuel pump appears to be working fine and is not having the same issues when I had the fuel pump previously replaced. FAIL only displays when the killswitch is off, when the pump is on. Due to the pump working and no other issues when riding apart from the backfiring, I'm thinking it's unrelated to an issue with the pump itself. What else can cause this, perhaps corroded wiring or similar?, I've heard issues with perhaps the O2 sensor (mine was removed and bridged from dealer).

This only started happening after reinsertion of the spark plug and ECU; aside from that I removed the tank, lifted up the rear end and removed the air box for cleaning.

Check for a weak spark against the head. Sounds like coil related, maybe just connection in the coil plug wiring.

What type of battery are you running? I had very similar issues to this while out on a 220 mile trail ride. Turns out the battery was bad and the voltage dropped under engine vibes. I had a Lithium. Probably not your issue but it's worth mentioning. The ECU and injection will not work with low voltage. The new red heads will though.

That sucks. Which lithium batter did you have? Did you switch back to lead/acid?

Yes I have lead acid stock battery back and no problems since. I had a Ballistic EVO2 8 cell. STAY AWAY FROM BALLISTIC! Terrible customer support and a prorated warranty. I went through 2 of those POS before giving up. Maybe EarthX or Shorai are better but I doubt it. The cells are made in China and they assemble the batteries here calling them "made in the USA". Ballistic marks up the MSRP offering you a prorated replacement more expensive than the actual retail price. A-holes IMHO

Shorai is the same way, you must pay 50% during warranty period. Like the ballistic battery, shorai shares some of it's difficulties. Earthx is different, there is no copay, it's a real warranty. It is twice the amp hour and 1.3lbs. If you order from us, I'll give you 10% off and free shipping.

Your other issue above could be due to a shattered key way. These engines are notorious for having these issues because dealers were not provided with the correct tools during install. Most dealers will impact the flywheel weights on which fractures the key. We designed a tool to keep this from happening and sent them out to dealers such as Halls and Bills.
You could give us a call on Monday as we could get more info about the issues and better diagnose the problem.

This bike is really limiting my riding. I keep reading about all these failures and there is no way I am venturing out by myself in the Alaskan bush with the poor reliability these bikes apparently have. I unfortunately limit my riding to dirt roads and short trail loops near roads. For that I could have just bought an XR650.

Funny;) I don't worry much. Iv'e done some 220 mile plus rides with no bike related issues yet. Only issue I had was an aftermarket battery crapping out but I was able to limp home. I am confident in my 310, so far...

I figure I am never more than 30 miles out because of tank milage. 2 days easy walking with a night to savor the Sterno.

That's some bad MPG there. I hit reserve at 90 and can get 100 before fill up regularly. Stock tank.
Or do you mean 30 miles out and then 30 miles back? I think I get it now. LOL

Yes... I recently got 75 till eserve but yes probably would not run to exactly 55 miles out and expect to get back every time. And the further the out and back the longer the hike home.

Yep. $160 or so for my Shorai and I used it for just over a year before it decided not to charge anymore. It would've cost me close to $100 to get a warranty replacement. I figured it'll probably fail again, and is not worth $100 a year. It also had very flimsy terminals which Shorai told me were 'upgraded' from how they were. Hard to imagine them being flimsier. Never again, Shorai.

Shorai sucks. I bought one and it was exhibiting inability to charge to 100% in the first week. It wasn't a small dirt bike battery, it was their largest motorcycle battery in a BMW touring bike. It still started the bike, but ABS wouldn't init unless the bike was warm. Same problem with a Gel battery that was about to head downhill. It was how I knew I'd need a battery before long. I got tired of that and tried a Shorai because they say they hold a charge for a year. What they don't say is how much of a charge… LOL I mean, it's not like the weight savings mattered on that 660lb beast. I bought it hoping for better reliability.

Sorry to the OP. I may have got us off topic a smidge...:excuseme:

Yeah, I didn't help any… But to get back on topic…

Since you did a disassembly, I'd double check the plug to the ECU.. hell any wiring related to fuel or ignition…

Even when operating normally, seeing FAIL isn't unusual. If you hit the start button for a sec, but don't' hold it long enough to start the bike, you'll get a FAIL.

Beyond that, I'm not of much help… :o

I have only had my TE310 since October last year but also had a backfiring problem and stuttering when revved. Eventually traced it to a suspect connection on the wire to the fuel pump. No problem after I made sure the connection was tightly fitted.
