  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE310 Engine wear

Daggy

G'day Fella's, I've got a question for anyone with a 310, I've got a 2011 te310 with 1700 klm's/ 70 hours on it and it's worn the coating off the front and back insides of the cylinder,(cylinder was removed to get leaking base gasket replaced).Dealer is telling me that it should have been checked at 30 hours along with piston/rings and that it's my probem to get it recoated, anyone else had a similar problem or heard of this before. Thanks, Darren

I've had two of these apart and the motors really showed no wear. One bike was raced hard for 2 seasons.

The chrome should never come off that cylinder unless you rode w/o an airfilter.

30 Hours you have to be kidding me so your dealer is telling you that you should be pulling the head apart and inspecting it after the first week of riding. I would remind him that it isn't a two stroke and ask him to point you in the direction of where husky is recommending this.

This is the first I have heard of this one no problem's to report on my 2011 TE310. She's running great and couldn't be happier.

Get a second opinion.

Seems way too early for rebuild or anything major.

ETA I think it's Nicasil, pretty hard to wear that down that fast.

judging by your first line in the post & name youd have to be aussie wouldnt ya daggy? sounds like another PFG "warranty" or warranty exemption knock back to you & me!

No need. Merely look at Page A2 of the 2011 TE310 owners manual:

Screen shot 2012-05-15 at 12.44.26 AM.jpg

For a powered up bike, checking the cylinder at 16hrs MX or 32hrs Enduro is recommended. Replacement at 32hrsMX or 64hrs Enduro is recommended.

Piston replacement is recommended at 16/32 and 40/80, with a check at 32/64.

Yes, this does seem friggin excessive, but it's fully documented.

Thanks for reply's fella's , I've always been fussy when it comes to maintanence-change air filter after every ride/day,regularly seviced, even changing oil inbetween sevices, never had any drama's with the new toy and love riding it, but if it's going to cost a new/recoat of barrel and piston every year it does'nt sound as good as other brands IMO. Anyway I'll get it fixed and roost away while I contemplate life in general..

Its dealer rubbish. I have had many bikes kept them 2 to 3 years and never had a head of. Huskies are generally bullet proof as long as you maintain them. 70 hours of trail riding is a mere doddle. I think closer to 200 is the mark.
Always put a cap of fully syn. 2 stroke oil in the fuel at each refuel. it acts as a valve seat cushion, lubes top ring and stabilises the fuel. Never smokes or fouls plugs. Make sure cat is out (who doesn't)

The only time I have ever had the coating worn in a cylinder is when dirt or water has gotten past the air filter. You are oiling the air filter after you clean it?

I wouldn't even look at my 2 stroke WR250 until 20 tanks of fuel (approx 80 hours) then rings and maybe a piston depending on wear.

Ok boy's,quick responses,
R_Little & joedirt - never even start up without a clean air filter and always oiled up(the filter too).
shawbagga - aussie thur & thru,PFG took about 2 months to approve my warranty claim of changing a leaking base gasket(from new) that started all this .
ghte - always run motul fuel additive in my bikes for that peice of mind.
mnb - thanks for clearing that up for me ,I coundn't make heads or tails of the service shedule but after reading your explaination it makes sense.

Anyone wanting to meet noise regulations and/or have any semblance of being street legal.
Semblence of being steet legal is what I'm shooting for! But no more than that.

No inspections here, half the trucks have straight pipes where I live. You can be quiet without the cat, that's not what it's for anyhow.

Might it have something to do with the leaky base gasket. If bad enough may have sucked in some dirt/dust?? If so bearings should be inspected closely.
Maybe water/dirt in crankcase vent? Ever submerge the bike?

Which additive are you using? Ta mate

That Chrome is so hard your aluminum piston would be worn to nothing long before the chrome wears off.

Really, you can suck dirt all day and it should never peel...just wear...a little...maybe.

If it flakes off it was not put on correctly.

Benriding, Base gasket leak wasn't bad enough to do any damage, it would leave a 1/2" stain which dirt would stick to on the right hand side of the cylinder/base join after about 100 klm's of riding. Every time i've done an oil change, oil has been good(not milky)and hasn't been submerged.

Julian, just went out and checked, sorry I lied to you ,it's Motorex system guard not motul and I only ever run the highst grade premium fuel I can get.

I use fully synthetci 2 stroke oil at circa 100:1 ratio. It is designed to burn off. However the benefits are a prolonged top end due to valve seat cushioning (lead substitute). It gives the tpy ring a tad more lube and the bi product is that for some reason the fuel seems to stay fresh longer in the tank.
I have not seen any increase in smoke from the engine nore plug fouling. Note I always use iriduim plugs for the reasons:
better burn so it helps ameliorate the oil in the fuel
better spark-really helps on cold start mornings
pretty certain my MPG is superior due to better fuel burn/more complete combustion.
Been doing the above for nigh on 8 years with all my Huskies.
