  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Te310 2011 questions

Hey guys,
As per my other thread I was in the market for a 310, well i ended up getting a 2011 te310 and couldn't be happier.
Took it for a run at the local bike park and was impressed with the bike, couldn't believe the difference between this and my drz, chalk and cheeze!!

Now to my questions,
I noticed that my bike came up with FAIL on the dash a few times. Once when i was about to start it and once while riding.
The time it came up when starting the fuel pump primed and the bike even started and seemed to rev fine, but scared of damage i turned it off then on again and FAIL came up again, so i tried pressing a few of the elec buttons (engine kill switch, blinkers and stuff) and noticed when i turned it to race map 2 it went away and could not repeat this problem even when running on map 1.

It also came up while riding as i just stalled it on this hill, turned the key off and on again started it and it didnt come up again, wondering if FAIL comes up if you stall it??

Any ideas guys? I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow to pick their brains, but it'd be good to see if anyone has had these problems.

Also after the ride I washed my bike, with a garden hose, and as soon as water went near the dash/ engine kill start switch the dash turned on with the low fuel light on (fuel was not low), normal looking and everything working as if I just turned the key and the dash could be turned off and on with the kill switch with the key off.
Since the bike has dried it is back to normal, I just find this frustrating being an enduro bike, wondering if sealing up the switch block and checking all connections is the fix, or just use bags over them when washing (i'd rather fix is properly)

Thanks heaps for the help guys much appreciated

The fail warning will come up if there has been something wrong OR a faulty sensor etc. It could possibly be a faulty temp sensor (easy fix-$15), or bad contact in the wiring somewhere.
Either way, if you can get it to a dealer and hook it up to i-beat, that will tell you what is wrong.
The switch blocks and dash are notorious for not being too waterproof, mine does similar (blinker light stays on till it dries out) so be really careful pressure washing around the bars/dash.
I would suggest you also pull apart all the connectors and put some waterproof grease in them, and check the fuses for cracks (even replace them).
These are awesome bikes, even better if you fit a JD tuner.
A couple of other things I found on mine:
Not much grease from the factory in the linkage/head/swingarm bearings, so I would advise you check these.
Changing the oil is a pain with the hose on the drain plug
Air filter access is not really easy.
Check the wiring loom under the tank isn't rubbed through and check the wires from the battery for chafing on the frame.

Enjoy the bike, I love mine.

Fail will come up if there's a problem starting... due to you or something else. If your thumb stutters on the start button, it might display FAIL. I think it might FAIL if you stall, too... not sure.

I've seen it a few times in the year I've owned mine, but it was never persistent.

Why are you spraying down the dash? You should NEVER spray any electronic components or connections. Wipe those areas with a damp rag instead.

i see the first reply spells doom and gloom and the need to spend money replacing things****************************************!!

The fail codes you mention are nothing to worry about in this instance.

When you turn the key on the fuel pump primes. if you try and start the bike and it doesnt fire straight away, you take another stab of the button too quickly and the pump didnt have time to reprime, as such it registers a "fail" mines done it loads when i first got it and it had a habit of stalling, i was a bit too eager to fire it up without waiting for pump to prime.

when i put it on ibeat it had no FAIL codes registered on the ecu.

If it has a problem starting from hot or the word fail stays on after you turn key off and on again then there may be an issue. commonist fault for non starting is temp sensor. replace with the newer white one. if starter gets lazy check left exhaust valve has correct clearance too big and the decompressor wont work and will overload and strain the starter, knackering the battery and burning out the starter.

as for the washing problems keep water away from ignition and clocks, mine does the same if i wash it with the hjose too vigorously. it sorts its self out when its dried out. use a water dispersant to keep things free of water.

Bike was covered in mud! Being an enduro bike I expect I to be able to handle a bit of water. I didn't go crazy with it only a glance of water to remove the clumps of mud.
I'll get it to the dealer and see if they can see the FAIL on the computer, and pick his brains about the funny electrics :)

Thanks heaps guys

Hey Tim,

The ignition switch really doesn't like water, the kill switch ( same on KTM & Husky ) is hardly any better, also the kill switch design makes it so easy to accidentally kill the bike when you are pushing it.

I'd recommend checking out the ECU connectors and also check out the Positive lead to the battery, my positive lead rubbed through & the efi was not impressed, my ECU connectors showed signs of arcing.

I love the handling/motor of the TE, but don't get me started on what I think of the electrics :).

Nigel

P.S. Dunno what your dealer is like, but I've had more luck with Auto Electricians.

Cheers mate, I gave my local dealer (R&D Husky) and they were fantastic over they phone!
Couldn't of asked for more friendly service and didn't mind talking over the phone, didn't just get bring it in and we'll fix it :)

Needless to say I have booked it in for a full service, map check/adjust, FAIL code read and change any sensors that may be faulty. He also reccommended the dielectric grease, so I will be doing that also :)
Thanks for all the help guys :)
