  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

How tall can you go?
I'd like to make it a little more streetable to get to trails further from my home without trailering the bike.
The bike has plenty of power in most circumstances for my weight (175 + gear), for the woods riding I usually do with the stock gearing and I don't want to lose too much but I would like it to scream a little less at 55mph.
So, short of buying a 450, any thoughts? Anybody play with gearing on the little bike?
 
I'm running 15/40 on my 310. 135 lb rider, side bags, etc...doing 55 mph at 5500 rpm. Throttle left to spare.
Before the side bags it went as fast as I cared to go...80+ Haven't tried since.
Reasonably quick.

It's not a change in power, just a change in power application.
Acceleration delivery distance is increased somewhat. Not incredibly...just some. Front end still feels light at WOT from dead stop...barely not enough torque to loft it.
Might go with a 16 front, If it fits.
 
50t stock. 40 came in the crate with some years (2010+ ?) but not installed.
Not sure about the front.

You can buy them cheap off lots of folks around here. Everyone prefers the 50.
You'll need a different chain.


If I were you, though, I'd go with a 45 or so rear with a chain to match. Switch the fronts up or down as you like, quickly. It does have the torque to pull out of boggy mud with the 40t, but you really need to wind it up.
 
Yes.. I may have to try a 45 as well. I just did a 150 mile desert ride with guys on 450's and 510's and my 250 with the 50 rear was a struggle on the long straights you find in the desert. The question is how much hill climbing torque do you lose with the 40t ? I dont do a lot of long steep hill climbs and I do some road work to get to the trails... hmmm...

The other question I now have is how much better a 310 would have been in these situations..?
 
Well, in theory, the 250 is better.
The Husky piston is wide but very short. Helps save weight, rotating mass, etc. But, on each stroke, the piston wants to flip itself sideways in the chamber. Kinda like if you cut the lid off a tin can and drop it inside the can.

The 310 is a 250 motor with an even wider piston. So, it has even more stress on the same short side-skirts, which keep it from flipping over. That means faster wear, increased worry, and all that.

Long straights always play with your head. Makes you want more horsepower, no matter what you ride.
I didn't buy the 310 for the extra power. I bought it because I like quirky underdogs, like myself.


The 40t gets me out of river beds and ravines. Given my poor body positioning and newbie skill level, the 40t is more than capable of anything I can do with it. And teaches me better throttle/clutch control without bucking me off.
 
I took my 250 for a ride on stock routes on weekend just gone and found that the engine was working to hard at 100kmph. Phoned up husky dealer and thought that about a 46 or 43 rear sprocket would be the smallest you could buy,but the te250 when shipped from Italy that they come with a 40t rear.So i am going to try the 13/40 combo.Dont know what it is going to be like till i try it.Has any one got gear combos that work doing 100kmph on a te250.
 
My 2010 TE-250 came with 13/40 and a 50 tooth as OEM extra. The 13/40 would do 60-mph on the street comfortably....but sucked off road on single track/hills. Installed the 13/50 and now the bike works well off road, with plenty of pulling power off idle up hills....but only cruises comfortably at 45-48 mph on the road. Why Husky went with such close ratios is strange! I miss the nice, wide ratio gear boxes found on the KTMs....but other then that, the Husky has been great.
 
:thumbsup: Thanks dalecarlsbad 13/50 is good off road in the bush,it makes it rev to hard on the highway.I will try the 13/40 to see how it goes I was thinking of the 12/40 so just a bit of tweaking to find the right ratio for the different riding.Thanks for the heads up on what you have found out.
 
I'm in the same bind, I have a 2010 TE 250 powered up - with the 50 rear sprocket. I do a fair bit of trail riding but ride road from trail to trail. Where I live, sometimes I need to travel 10-30 miles on roadways that are 40-50mph. It's difficult because I don't want to keep the little 250 screaming for long, I try to hover around 6200rpms in 6th which keeps me around 45mph.

Here is a short video of the type of trail riding I do, sometimes a good bit of rocks as seen in this video - or mud - so the 50t is really needed for the trails, but not so much for road.

I wish I could cruise at 50-55mph without stressing the engine, and still have it geared for trails. Guess the 310 is next on the bike list :cool:
 
Wish they'd have though to just give it a long sixth gear. I rarely get into fifth offroad with a 12/50 setup. They should've made sixth like an overdrive...
 
Well I might be lucky, put 13/40 on today,Son and I went for a 2hour ride out the Town Common and the gearing.Much to my surprise was just awesome,just seem to felt like I was riding a wr360.I know that sounds strange but I just had a ball on it.Even though I did over jump and land on the flat,It shocked me. Lucky for me it is flat and open hear in Goondiwindi Queensland so you can hold it on.
