• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 449 gearing change.

Gday All,
I'm still loving the TE 449, my only small complaint is that the gearing is a tad short to sit on 100kph (60mph) without revving a bit harder than I'd like.
I have been thinking of changing the rear sprocket to maybe a 48tooth.
Has anyone else done this?
I don't want to compromise the gearing to much for the tight stuff.
I ride with guys on Ktm's and Husabergs, and only do small say 10 kilometre stretches at 100kph to get to the tracks etc.
I'm not after a highway cruiser, I'd just like to sit on close to 100kph without revving the bikes tits off.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Glenn

Glenn,
In my opinion, to go 3 teeth less on the rear is a bit much for a 449.
I only changed my rear from the standard 51 to 50 on my 511 and it cruises easliy at 90 kph.
I also did not want too long a first gear either.
IMHO a 50 tooth rear on a 449 will just take the edge off the revs for you.

I was thinking maybe 50 tooth rear maybe the way to go.
Stock gearing is awesome for the type of riding we do down this way, IMO the standard gearing is much better than my cousins Kato 530 once we get to our tracks. The pumpkin is just better at getting there. I hate dragging the chain.
IMO Husky would make a great bike even better if top gear was just a fraction taller.

I was just wondering if you had tried the 50 tooth rear. I have considered changing my rear sprocket to make my TE449 a little more comfortable on the highway.

Sorry mate, I have not tried it yet.
I'm tossing up between a 50 or a 49 rear.
I don't do big road miles, like you ...a little more comfortable at about 100kph (60 mph) would be great.
I see Motosportz has rear sprockets out on sale at the moment.

I believe that I will try the 49 rear myself. I am looking for the same "comfortable at about 60mph (100kph). I will let you know if and when I make the change. I am not familiar with Motorsportz so I will have to check them out. I have had some difficulty finding online stores that supply Husky parts.

I have used Motosportz and they are very good to deal with.
I have recently purchased a JD tuner off of them and have a steering damper on its way.
If you don't have a tuner yet..... Get one. Holy sh!t does it unleash he beast on he 449.

I am looking forward to hearing your results with the 49. I spoke with Dan at Motoxotica and he suggested that I go all the way to a 47. He said that his good friend rides a TE449 a lot and has the 47. I hope it is not too much. Oh well, we will see. BTW, I am also going to use the JD tuner to add a little power.

I like the 49 tooth, it helped a lot. I can now do 60 mph on the local freeway without buzzing the engine (even though thats not fast enough here in LA). I am a little curious if I should have gone a little more(less teeth). My riding is not usually tight & technical, there is some but more open desert roads and faster speeds. I might try a 47 or 48 but will have to pull a link off the chain for it.....

I expect to get my 47 tooth early this week. I will install, test, and report back with the results by the end of the week. I hate that I will have to remove a chain link. No turning back without buying a new chain. Oh well, I purchased the 47 under some pretty solid advice so I am sure it will work out.

I fitted a 49 tooth rear sprocket today and at this stage I am happy with the results.
I went riding with some mates to our local national park, 100 kilometres total ride.
30 kilometres on the road, 100kph felt much more comfortable than the standard gearing.
The remainder of the ride was in sand hills and some tight single track. Gearing seamed spot on for this type of riding.
First gear was noticeably taller but will not be a problem.
Pulling wheelies was no worries thanks to my JD Tuner.
For the type of riding I do I believe the 49 tooth is gunna be spot on, just taking the edge off the revs at 100kph without stuffing up offroad performance.
Cheers

The more I think about it, I will probably leave the gearing alone for now until I tune it to where I want (pipe, map II and JDC). Then adjust more if/as needed...

I changed my rear sprocket to 49 and my front to....i think a 12. I love it, and it rocks with the new config. The husky has tons of horses and it was to explosive at small throttle changes in the tight stuff (woods), it is way more communicative now and I know whats coming (from the engine) when I turn the throttle.

Hi guys, I am running 15/44 gearing on my TE 449 with supermoto wheels and tires. Anyone else running this setup? What do you think of it?

You are the first i have heard or seen converting one to SM. I bet this bike would make a great SM ride****************************************

Hey Jason, I'm glad I found someone who owns a TE 449 with a sumo setup. My question is how do you like it? I have a chance to buy one for $8300 OTD. It has warp 9 wheels and brake upgrade.

I was gonna commute around 20 miles/day in divided trips. I hit about 70+ for a few miles. I also figured I can keep the stock rear sprocket on the dirt wheels and a smaller on on the sm setup. I thought I could splice in a couple extra links with a secondary master link. You think the bike would last a few years (im only 150 lbs) and do you think the higher gearing ur running is still fun on the street?

I need to make up my mind about the bike asap. Or I'm buying a fully modded des with a big bore for $3500 whick is a sweet deal.

Thanks for any suggestions.

P.s. I'm in SoCal.

When converting to SM do you need to use a rear rim with crush or soft start?
As I want to convert my TE449.
