  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 310 vs KTM 350 exc-f vs Beta 350 RR

http://www.cycleworld.com/2012/04/0...varna-te310-vs-ktm-350-exc-f-comparison-test/

Here is the actual article with some more detail. To be honest I think the KTM would be a better bike when money is no object. In my world sadly it is and with husky offering great year end deals the TE310 was about $3000 less out the door than the KTM! $3000 are you kidding me toss $3000 at a husky and $0 at a KTM and then tell me which bike is better.

Wow, they say the TE is all low end snap?

My TE250 is all top and no bottom.

Anyway we all agree that the TE needs a WR transmission.

Of course at that $3k lower price the TE can't be beat!

KTM's prices and USA outsourcing of Americans' jobs are making the Indians richer by the hour. Frankly, I'd rather put my money in Italy rather than India any day.

A couple points don't make sense in that article. They list the TE310 DRY weight at 259 lbs. That's nearly 30 lb difference than what manufacturer lists (I think 233 lbs?).

And they also say it has a narrow powerband range and doesn't perform well in higher revs?? Really? I got a 2010 TE250 and that thing outputs decent power (for a 4stroke 250) above 6000rpms to about 10000. I would think 310 would do the same or better. I guess in comparison it may not perform as well, but they should know that since it's a 250 bored out basically.

That KTM 350 does look very nice though - despite it being a complete ripoff money wise ;)

That Ktm might be better if you source some red and white plastic and new graphics with only one letter not 3, and lower the price by a $2500-3500..

I think I'd still like the TE310 better for its specific purpose of tight technical terrain, and it already has the right letter. "H"

Do you mean wheelie power ;)

he means versatile, like: can more easily be utilized in various conditions... "tight technical" slow to "easy open" high speed.

I think the xlites and all husky's are generally "geared" more towards technical riding- thus no overdrive for 70mph cruising. (don't bother me, I hate anything too open) I can get to 70 quicker and am gonna have to turn or brake soon anyway (least i hope to).

Surprised at the results a bit... they made the Beta sound like a pig and the husky a bit of a wimp... I think with the 12 injector and ECU it woulda been alot different (with more top end to match the bottom). Also, Did I see a charcoal canister on the TE? Wonder how well set up it was for their tests?

It probably wasn't powered up...

BTW, it's a $500 fine to remove emissions equipment in California, which includes that stupid canister. Considering is has no effect on performance (other than adding maybe a pound of weight), it doesn't make much sense to remove it.

I like the 310 much better for tight trails too. But for versatility and KTM wins hands down. If you want to DS or ride open stuff the KTM is better and still does the tight stuff well. If all you ride it tight stuff for sure get the 310. Feels 20 pounds lighter and flat JUMPS between the trees.

These were the three bike I was looking at to buy for my next bike. I researched more than I should have and this review is about right.
In short if you want to race GNCC get the TE
If you want a great DS that has 15,000 mile motor get the RS
If you want a bike that falls in the middle get the EXC-F

None of these are bad bike but they all have advantages. Any rider can be happy on either one but only one would be the best if you rode all of them side by side. For the money the TE looks great but the motor life is a concern for anyone looking for many miles of use. This was told to me by many dealers. KTM has a price tag that scared many and a questionable injector issues. Beta is heavy, and has no new technology (pre-2008) which should last very long. You just have to find one!

If your worried about engine life you would have enough money left over to rebuild it twice if you were considering it over purchasing the KTM.

As with all 4 strokes.... Keep a clean air filter on it, change the oil at regular intervals & valve adjustments. Compression/leak down test are helpful too.

I might get a chance to check out the Beta if George gets the 3 bikes in he ordered. A 450 had a very smooth (counterbalanced) engine and wide ratio trans

I doubt I'd buy a beta off the floor, but you can custom build one on their website. Even get it sprung for your weight right out of the box. I wish more mfgs did this. Even for a minor "customization fee."

Only one rebuild with the savings whitch would make the TE last to about 8000 miles, based on the dealers I talked with.

This is a given, basic maintanence is a must but these X-lite motors are not design to be long lasting. There were design to be a racer first and most important to win! Are they great bikes?? Yep but will not last the same as the older red head. This kept me away from buying because of my intented use.
