  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

tc449 overheating

Husqvarna
A Class
Here comes the noob questions sorry... Been riding the tc449 for a while now and it has always seemed to overheat in the tight tight woods. Im a intermediate rider that i tend to get myself over my head and i have noticed the bike overheats from time to time. is this a big deal ? I let it sit and cool down and ride for a while and its fine till i get stuck or stall on a steep hill and by the time i get going again after 5 or so attempts its hot again. think romanic type stuff

More noob questions
should i totally stop the bike and let it kool down ?
should it even be doing this ?
what should i be worried about ?
What damage am i causing ?
should i be running engine Ice instead of coolant ?

Yes the coolant is topped up
the bike seems to run warm/hot even from new
yes there is oil in the engine
i just got my first dent in my pipe Sunday when i lost the front end going down a lose baby head hill. Super small scratchs with a bit of a flat dent ( will take pics in the daylight)

There is not may of these around the lowermainland Vancouver Bc
maybe 4 ive seen or herd of so i have nothing to compare it too.
i was told 4 strokes get very hot in tight woods riding and its to be normal.

rode 2 strokes as a kid till i was 18 or so then got into racing Downhill mtn bikes moved out west to whistler and never looked back till i was 34 this is my first bike back its a husky ( good deal) love the bike its a 4 stroke and im riding in deep tech woods riding think 1st 2nd gear unless it opens up to a fire road. 2 weeks ago i climbed from 3800 feet to 8000feet in a race and she didnt seem to overheat much but i kept some good flow the entire time.

It's really no fault of your own. The TC is designed for MX and is meant to keep going. TE's and TXC's have a fan which I'm sure you could add if you wanted. Everyone seems to have good luck with Zip-Ty racing coolant.

I did the same thing. I let it sit and idle. My TC just started over heating so I thought I broke it. I don't have fans on any of my YZs and they never overheat. I just put engine ice in it and it has helped a lot.

If this is your regular riding, high-stress and low-airflow then I would use the Zip-Ty (Evans) coolant and add a fan. Ideally when it heats up you would ride at speed someplace you arent lugging the engine, but that is probably not possible in the situation you describe. This is what fans were made for.

Thanks for the info guys. I did a little asking around with the shop i bought the bike from and they also said its a track bike the does well in the woods but by no means is she meant for the tight stuff full time. She needs to breath. Ive been thinking txc310r now that ive really looked into it ... the shop has a 2012 Te310 its all set up for dual sport, mirrors dot tires etc that i can take for a spin. Is the te310 going to feel anything like the txc310 and is it true about the 310 having tons of bottom end ? I like the less weight for sure i don't need the 449 for what i ride but im around 240lbs with full gear and camel back will the 310 pull me up the gnar ? i will have to wait to try the tiptys XF coolant as i picked up some Ice from the shop. should have read this first.

I would add a 4" Spal fan and thermostat to your TC, these bikes run hot anyway. A fully opened 310R will pull you, but will not have the bottom end torque or traction of your 449. Bummer on the engine ice, they really should ban the use of that in the off road bikes. It will work for a while until the water boils off, then it will be as thick as 140 weight oil.

Most people on the 2012 te310 got the txc ECU and injector. Buying a 310 and throwing some into it doesn't make sense when you can just buy a fan. Not to mention depreciation of the 449.
The 310 is great and has quite a bit more torque then a 250 but nothing like the 449. The reason I love the 449 is I can be lazy and just use the torque for everything. The 310 is nice because you feel like a hero. It's just enough power that it won't scare you but it will haul. I'm 230 pounds and both are great bikes. I'm a bum so I'd pick the 449 lol.

Changing to a different coolant or "engine ice" won't do squat. The tc is a motocross bike meant for fast tracks always moving. I'm not sure if they even have a thermostat? A cooling fan would help though, you might be able to rig up your own with a manual switch pretty easily.

I am running two fans , my 511 needs it for slow trails. The 4" spal doesn't have the duct and you will need to build more complex bracket unles you buy a OEM fan, is what I did. I'm loving how my bike stays cool and don't need to shut it down and rest if I am having a hard time going threw a technical section.

I'm in the process of adding a second fan, the spal 4in. Not done yet though

This is a good point. I personally have not ridden the 310. But I own an uncorked TE250 and have a 450 (yami but basically same as a husky 449) and it's night and day difference. Unless the 310 is miracously more powerful then the 250 then you maybe underwhelmed going to a 310 from a TC449.

As others have stated, going the TXC route will give you much better power then any uncorked TE models, because the TE models from my understanding, with the basic uncork mods will still need a TXC ECU/Injector to get all the power from it.

TE's do have a plate, but depending on where you live, I'm sure you could get a TXC on the road/plated with the proper lighting equipment - a local shop could help with that stuff. It's probably more lenient in Canada too..

A single fan and XF / Evans is not a cure all for your bike. Your tc model has higher compression than the TE and will build more heat at a stand still . The good XF coolant won't boil but your bike can still over heat. Depending how hot of a day a single fan will still allow your engine to get too hot . 2 fans is gold. For your bike I would run XF , fan and a temp sencer . Minimum. And for woods riding consider your gear ratio, the less clutching = cooler bike
