  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

The engine side has lots of dirt. Could the dirt be getting in thru the throttle body or am i doing a crappy job oiling the air filter.
I have done a lot of racing for many years and clean the filter every week this the first bike i have ever had this happen to

It's oily dirt. When oiling your filter, do you add grease to the sealing edge of your air filter?

You might wanna run your hand down inside the air box before you tighten that wingnut down and verify that all 4 guide prongs on the filter cage are seated correctly inside the air boot. One prong can sit on that seat base and not inside the air boot, stopping a seal from ever happening.

Is there any reason not to grind the 4 prongs down to provide a tighter seal? After sucking dirt myself and having to rebuild, I would like to prevent future dirt sucking....

You guys got me paranoid now...LOL I have my bike torn down for winter maintenance so i will pull the intake boot and take a peek to see if it's dirty in there. I change oil frequently so hopefully I am in front of excessive wear.

You don't need to pull the boot. When you've got the filter out, just run your finger around the inside of the air box downstream of the filter. If your finger is clean, then you are fine. I use Amsoil waterproof grease to seal my filter, just because I have it around. That stuff is very sticky.

I like to use a piece of white paper towel. You can see even the tiniest bit of dirt.

I use No-Toil rim grease, it's the most sticky disgusting stuff invented by man, like shit on a blanket, does a perfect job of sealing the filter though.

Unless you have a different filter cage than my bikes, there is no way those guides should get in the way of sealing the filter to the air box ... When replacing the filter, just run your hand inside the airbox towards the bottom and verify the guides are lined up and inside the air box ...Simple and its ok to touch the filter ...

Im thinkin my problem is not enough oil on the filter. When i take the filter out i can see that it is sealing cause of the impression left from the air box.

I was using no toil EVO but just switched to PJ1 spray on. The EVO was hard to get a thin layer and most of it dripped out the drain hole a day later. The EVO looks like frog jizz or kawi green paint... Super sticky though. Maybe I was applying it wrong but I always ended up with too much because it would drip out a day or 2 later.

In regard to grinding the 4 plastic prongs off the cage, fit the cage without and air filter and you will see what they do.
They locate the air filter in the airbox opening they don't rest on the sealing surface :)

My advise would be to NOT grind these off :)
