• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I've been running 45W bulb(s) in the stock 08 head light assembly. The 08 stator/regulator over drives it a bit. Nice to have the light but it's melted the insides. I made a vent hole but have yet to prove it won't fill up with dust too quick. So, I'm on the lookout for a glass replacement.

This appears to be a direct OEM plastic replacement. Wish I could find a glass/metal lightweight replacement. Maybe heat resistant Plexiglas and titanium. Yeah, that's it!

I'm running a 45w in my 07, a little brighter until I step on the brake pedal, then it gets awfully dark in a hurry!:eek:
 
the motard guys seem to have some discussion on options-here

seems the easiest thing I've seen is the trailtec x2 light-

But it would be cool to find a lense for the stock light that just didn't melt

I don't do alot of night riding but am impressed with the stock husky light over other stock lights I have experienced. (09te450)- I think the only change between 08 and 09 is mine is mounted with metal rather than rubber straps- great until something whacks mine out of adjustment for good- its bound to happen at some point

wow, I think that's the first time I've heard anyone say that about the Husky light


I put the 45w in mine also ('05). Haven't noticed any melting (although will pay more attention now) or dimming while braking, but I cheat with a LED brake/tail light.
The 45 is better than the 35, and will get me off the mountain at night or down city streets, just can't say I'm real thrilled about it ......maybe I got spoiled more than I thought, my old '94 Suzuki DR350 came stock with a nice patterned 55w halogen. (& that was the dirt model)

Quite some time ago, someone on TT posted instructions on how they fit a auto 55H4 lamp in the stock housing. I started to do this, but never took the time to finish it.........kind of curious now if he had any melting issue over time.

From what I've read, I'll probably be looking at the TrailTech X2 one of these days. (peferably in blue housing to somewhat match my '05)
 
OK... after some looking I found the part # for the light I put in my bike

It is the replacement light for 2 of the UFO lights. Its in about the middle of the page on the right hand side. It is just a tiny bit bigger than the stock light. You have to drill 2 new mounting holes in the stock headlight bezel and use 2 rubber washers about 3/8 of an inch thick to use as spacers in between the new light and the mounting tabs on the sides of the bezel. The light uses a H4 55/60 watt bulb. You can cruse down the road @ 70mph at night and still feel safe..Gives off a great light pattern. If you would like pics of one installed let me know.

You can run them off the stator or from Battery packs. The Halogen is fine and you can ride at night without a headlight as I did on the old DRZ4 in Morocco when the bulb blew. Oncoming motorists may honk at you but I could see fine! :thumbsup:

Thanks all, scoobywrx05 the UFO replacement looks good, a bit pricey though. I should mention, when riding at night offroad I do have additional lights, 2x20w halogen handlebar light, plus 2x13w HID helmet lights. Mucho light for my speeds.

So far the vent hole I made in the top of the plastic bulb holder seems to be working fine, no additional melting and not any significant dust to worry about.
 
have you looked at the light that kelly has??

Yeah thats the only down fall of it is the price,,,if they where more around $40 instead of $80,,,but they are a metal cast housing with a really thick lens. a couple nice things I like about it are,,it keeps the stock/factory look and fits in there like it is supposed to be there and has the same depth as the factory light so it doesn't push up against any of the wiring behind it and takes bulbs that I can get just about anywhere. I don't know,,,I just don't care for the look of the 2 headlight setups or the big 8" one.

Looks totally stock! I agree, I like the standard single light. Friend, looks like you ran over a bunch of screws, they're all stuck in your tires. :)

Yeah when the snow gets more than 6" deep and the ground freezes you need all the help you can get.
