    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Hello !

Had some play in the column steering, so i re-torqued it but the lower bearing seems to have flat spots (due to play I guess). I found a bearing for replacment, but not the seal ring.

Hope to get help with its removal, as all my attempts until now hasn't been successful. At this stage, next step will be grinding, but it would be destructive also for the seal ring I want to use again.

Tried to punch the head of the shaft, but it doesn't move at all, as you can see ont the photo.

Really the only easy way I've found is to press the stem out the bottom of the clamp and bearing. There are bearing removers that have a thin edge that slips under the bearing as you tighten the two halves but pressing it out is much easier.

I don't like messing with the stem press fit. The lower bearings are tough to get off without ruining the seal. I typically use a punch to get them off (always successful) but this destroys the seal. Is the lower bearing in visibly bad shape? Sometimes the rollers are ok but the outer race is bad. It is possible you could get away with replacing only the outer race. You would have to inspect the inner race and rollers closely, but if ok then you wouldn't need the lower seal. Keep in mind that this is not a high RPM bearing application. Other bike brand seals may also work. Find a non-husky bike that uses the same lower bearing and then the seal would be correct for OD and ID. Hope this helps. Cam.

As i dont want to buy one of theses special bearing remover for a 1 time application, i'll go in Cam suggestion : checking the inner race, and keep it in place if it's still good.

That hurts a little my perfectionnist thinking but i need to have my "scooter" running tomorrow, eh !

Well ...

Took a shortcut in not even checking the inner race, but got straight to assemble w/ old inner - new outer race on the bike to see if it works smooth without flat/hard spots.

Then another issue appared, as the inner race didn't fit properly into the outer race, when seated in the steering tube.
Once the outer ring drived out, it fits perfectly with the inner.
Measured the hole where it sits down the steering column to observe a half millimeter false round :eek: , which led to put the outer race out of shape.

Pfff ........

Grinded the outer race accordingly, and all fits and works smooth now :banana:
I have to remember that for the next time, if ever
And ... I still have to learn how to drive a lower steering bearing out
