  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Steel plates in clutch turned blue?

Has any body else seen this problem?

My clutch was grabbing on my 511 a few months ago - every time I put it in gear it just starts trying to ride off with me, even with the clutch in. It's so bad that even with the engine off you can't have it in gear with the clutch in and push it around without straining yourself.

I've had to previously replace the torque limiter and when I took it in to the shop to have the clutch fixed they replaced the steel and fibers in the clutch because the steel was blue, which they said was because it'd gotten too hot. They just figured that because the plates were blue they must have been the problem. When I got it back it was just as bad, if not worse, particularly when it got hot. When I took it back they diagnosed a blown head gasket so it's been having a top end rebuild. They tried to give it back the other day but the problem is still there so they still have it.

When I had it back before the top end rebuild, I took it for a hard ride and noticed something strange. It felt like there was air in the lines or something, because as I was riding, the clutch grab slowly started getting worse and worse, every time I pulled the clutch in. It started off not too noticeable, but after about 15 minutes of hard riding I started to notice it getting worse. It got to the point where it was as if the clutch wasn't even in when you were at a standstill, and so the bike would stall.

As I said, the torque limiter has been replaced, the plates have been replaced, I've checked and double checked the lever (as it almost feels like the lever isn't depressing all the way) and still got the problem.

Is it possible that the excessive heat that blued up the plates also degraded the springs?

Every dirt bike and quad i have ever owned had the steel clutch plates turn blue. You problem sounds like you have air in the line or you need to adjust the lever.

Yeah I tried that. That's why I can't figure it out, because that's what I first thought too...

The plates turning blue is a symptom of another problem.

If there is air in the clutch line, the problem could get worse when you ride due to everything heating up, which would cause the air to expand.

With 4200 kms on my bike the steel plates have no bluing on them. Of course I have a broken plate but otherwise they look new. :D

Clutch plates turn blue from slipping the thing, wouldnt worry unless theyre warped.
Had a similar problem with mates dr turned out he had a broken friction plate.

I would take it to another garage as seems to me the people your currently using are finding problems not related to the clutch one.
Can you back bleed hydro clutch?
And can you adjust the actual clutch not the lever?
The slave on the clutch isnt leaking is it? May have damaged o ring in it.

These guys seem pretty good. Thanks juicy, I'll have a look at those. I think maybe it could be the o ring, or maybe the hose down near the clutch. All I know is, its driving me crazy!

Yeah I will. I effectively own a trailblazing because all I seem to do is write posts about obscure problems!

Replace the slave with an aftermarket one, pull that clutch out and really check it out. Then see how you go. Maybe the slave o ring is worn or leaking or something. You have a disengagement problem clearly, so unless the fingers on the basket are worn to the point of the plates catching and binding, it should be a non issue if they are worn/slipping, because that is not your problem.
