    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Staples bounce off of the plastic

So I just cut down the foam on my seat in lieu of lowering the bike.

I tried a brand new Arrow electric, "Professional Heavy Duty" staple gun and they just about get the points embedded in the plastic and then bend over. I can pull out w/my fingers.

I used 1/4" T50 staples per the Guts instructions. I played around w/the power adjustment on the gun but didn't help. I tested the gun on hardwood and staples went right in.

I then bought a Powershot stapler and the exact thing happened.

Any tricks?

I have a Bostitch brad nailer/stapler. Shortest staple per their site is 1/2". Is that ok to use?

Should I check Harbor Freight for a dedicated stapler?
 
1/2" is too long, I used 5/16", I had to hold the tip of the hand stapler I used very hard to the plastic. I had to fight to keep the spring power from bouncing the stapler out. With some practice, I got 95% of the staples in flush with the fabric of my Seat Concepts cover. It CAN be done with a hand stapler.

I take all my seats to the trim shop now. I got tired of having to finish off the staples with a tack hammer. For $20, it gets done by a pro and I love it. I'll never pop another staple again.

I couldn't ever get a seat cover properly stapled with a regular mechanical stapler. I finally popped 20 bucks (they went up in price since I bought mine about a year ago) for a little air stapler from Amazon.com. It made putting a cover on a real breeze.

Thanks, everybody, for the quick and helpful responses. I'll give the easy ones a try first and report back.
 
1/4" flat crown staples pop right in. dont go 1/2" way too long- not comfy if it pokes through. i use a little bitty red arrow JT21 springer i got back who knows when. contact cement works in really tight spots if the snoot on yer tacker's too short.

no red stapler jokes now...:lol:

I put on a cover with an electric one once. I had to push down as hard as I could with both hands and about 75% of them went in. The air model looks like it would be a lot easier.
 
ive used a bunch of non-professional grade tackers and the springers are as, or almost as good, as the air poppers in most cases. the air ones save ya a ton of sweat though.
the electric ones ive tried are junk. stickin' with my 20 y/o tacker.
and yes it helps to really bear down on the piece with these.
 
I gave it a go yesterday w/the electric and spring guns. Got enough in to hold the cover in place but still not totally pleased. I was heating the cover and plastic w/a heat gun and I think that made things a little bit easier.

I'm now waiting to check out a buddy's air stapler to see if he has the right staples or at least capacity. Thanks again.
 
Alrighty, thanks to this thread I had a pretty easy go at replacing my torn seat cover with a Guts version this morning. Pneumatic is the way to go! I got this 1/2" crown stapler at Harbor Freight today for 25 bucks and had to hunt for 1/4" deep staples for a couple hours. Not a common size and I almost gave up to use a hand stapler with 5/16 depth instead. Stopped at a small time hardware store on the way from Lowes and Shazaam, they had them! I'll let the pictures do the talking. Just follow Gut's instructions. That's it.

Ioneater - How weird is this?

I did the EXACT same thing this past Saturday. Went to Harbor Freight after dinner at Famous Dave's. Bought the same stapler for $25 (minus 20% coupon). No staples at store. Checked their website and they weren't ever offered. Looked at Lowe's and Depot - nothing. Arrow's were too narrow. I checked some more websites and somebody said the 1/4" were discontinued.

I then went to a local hardware store in Toms River. Guy has everything. I bought the same pack of staples but the no. 5 size. The gun shot two at a time perfectly. I ended up going back to the store and bought the no. 6's and stapled the cover on in about 15 minutes. Awesome.
 
I've been trying to fit a piece of seat covering (not made for my seat

) on my 250. What a PITA. I think that the sewn in section in the front is the key. I ended up tearing it appart cause it absolutely wouldn't work.
