  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Sprocket setup and chain length

Hard to believe I'm considering a larger rear sprocket....as low as the stock gearing seems, and being in 6th gear by the time you've crossed an intersection :D
A couple of offroad rides though and I could see where a bit lower gearing would be a good thing.
I see folks talking about going from 13/40 to 13/52? That's a huge difference...

I'm thinking of going up a few teeth in back at most, depends on what size Ironman is available - huge fan of those sprockets and have never worn one out on big thumpers.
Will buy a 120 link RK XSO to have in case I need more links.

Now that I know how to tighten my chain........ How long should it be? That is, where in the adjusters is the best place for the rear axle? How close should the tire be to the mud flap?

As long as the tire is not touching the flap, and tearing it up, you should be OK. The farther BACK the wheel is, the better high-speed handling/stabikity you have. Like 70mph on a bad dirt road, up on the pegs and bouncin' all over the place, gas on hard.
The closer the wheel is to the mudflap, the better slow speed handling you have, tight, single-track, changing directions every second.

Of course, if your chain is cut, you have no choice about where to put the axle, you put it where the chain says to put it, the only time you have a choice is before you cut the chain.

Just put a RK X-ring chain on my 2012 TE310. Used a 120 link chain and took a few links off. 13/45
After this last weekend's ride, I know that I need a bit lower first gear for some technical climbs.
I'll be using this combo (13/45) and also being an RX XSO x-ring fan, I'll be picking up a 120 link chain and seeing how many links I need to remove.

I cut an opening in the plastic piece, right where the manual says to measure the slack, and I cut several pieces of PVC so I have one in all my tool locations and truck.

is your bike a TE250? with the sprocket configuration shown in the picture what is the top speed you get? I have a 12/50 sprocket and its too slow..

114 is the right length for a 250 with that gearing, that year.a 450/ 510 of the same year was 13/47 and that was taking a 112 chain and it was close to rubbing the shock mudflap.dan

My bike is a 450. i run a 13/44 now, I can do 60mph at 5700rpm, that's considered fairly high gearing. With 12/50 gearing, you are probably revving 7000rpms at 60 mph.

what is the speed at 6000 in 6th gear with that gearing setup 13/45?
