  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Hey guys just wondering if a steering damper will help my issue here. I have a 2013 te449 and when im on the street and i hit about 4th/5th gear I get some significant shaking in the handlebars. Im thinking the damper would fix this up just looking for some opinions. Im sure itll be great in the dirt too, to be honest I havent even riden it in the dirt yet I just got the bike this week and in the process of doing all the necessary mods for it.
 
Steering head bearing adjustment (mine were loose), tire runout, (put it on a stand use a can with plastic straw on it,
Put it an 1/8" from front of,tire, then side. Will show you wheel true. While its on the stand, spin wheel, when it stops,
Make mark at bottom of wheel, spin again, if it keeps coming back to same marked spot, it's out of balance, if it stops in
Different places it's ok..(remove brake caliper for this and make sure it spins free) also make sure your not gripping
Your bars tightly, and tensing up....look closely at tire at bead while you spin it, it should be even line, not varying.

When I said 4th/5th gear I meant being wide open too, I was flying through the gears on the road. I still don't think it should b like that. When I let of the gas it would stop. Ima check the things you guys told me today and give it another ride since I only rode it like twice so idk if its a reoccurring problem yet
 
Sounds like loose steering head. Heck I rode mine 50 mi home from the dealer brand new. Even had to do a short freeway stint and its always been solid. Even with lower tire pressure for off road, mine has never done that.

Something is no bueno.
 
It might just be a characteristic of the bike. My 450 gets a little squirrely above ~60, especially while on the gas. Fairly quick steering geometry + horse power + light front end + DS tires = possible head shake, especially at higher speeds. I see a lot of folks on this forum that are using a steering dampener. My Speed Triple always gives me a little head shake at the top end of 3rd gear, but I kinda like it. :D
 
Loose steering head seems like it could b the problem mixed with the high speed.. Hopefully it's not a bent rim or something. Either way ill prob get a damper I've read really good reviews about them on this bike
 
If you can't find it, take it back to the dealer. Sounds like a prep issue that should not happen.

Put it up on a stand. Grab the fork at the bottom, push them away and pull back to you. If they are really loose, you
Will feel or hear some clicking or a knock. With front wheel off,the ground, center steering, barely touch grip
Towards tank, should move slowly towards left or right. If it falls quickly, feel loose, adjust.
Remove handle bar, loosen nut directly under bar ( mine is 30mm) take spanner wrench (or an aluminum punch, if
None of the a regular punch or screw driver). Tighten slotted nut just snug.(I like the wheel on the ground so that
Slack is taken out, you can really see if it's loose then, just tap it gently till it stops, and maybe one more gently after.
Put it back together then slowly ride it, increasing speed to see if it helped. You USB manual should explain this also.

I just bought a 2013 TE449 also and installed a GPRv4...
It's okay till 70mph, but after that, any bump on the road, need a damper, but nothing too bad...had her up to 92MPH...
