  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Special parts desert race 510

Does somebody has heard about this device ?
It seems to be an electric pump added in order to oil cooling by a radiator ?

Larry Roeseler Desert 510

Hey
Does somebody have others pics about this special 510 Baja of Larry Roeseler ?
I find It very nice with the spoilers which seem to improve aircooling of headcylinder ? or of oil radiators ???
I like also the 2 in 1 supertrapp exhaust.
Thanks
Michel

Michel,
looks like some kind of electric oil pump to a cooler, very weird.
1st time i've seen any kind of home made device like this.

John

I think I have one of those Supertrapps hanging in the garage. I believe George made them. Mine was off a 1987 510.

Any pics of the supertrapp or of the whole bike ???
Thanks
Michel

You should contact George at Uptite Husqvarna in California.
I think he made some of those, and i think he raced some of those bikes, and i think he probably has some of those parts still somewhere in his shop.

He knows everything about Husky desert racing bikes, etc.

Thanks
Michel

My 1986 Husky 510 is air cooled and has air channeling shrouds on both sides of the tank. Bought mine brand new and still have it, runs like a top. All these pics are showing some kind of add on oil cooler used for desert racing that I have never seen before. FWIW......

My 1992 Yamaha WR500 is also air cooled, has a shroud on the left side only, pipe on the right.

I have got one of Georges Uptite two into one exhusts on one of my 510's. It looks like the one in Roeselers pic but mine is chrome. It doesnt look nothing at all like the supertrap unit, I got one of those in my parts crate some place. I also remember George talking about an oil cooler he made and something about a trick to make the ignition live longer. I havent talked to George in 9 years, so my memory might be wrong about the cooler

Michel,
I have a 86 frame with the back bone modified to be an oil tank.
This one was used for the australian safari - a race of around 4000km..
but it I dont know if it was connected to the engine or just spare oil...

I have seen that for sale several months ago. Uptite made.
Works only when the bike is running.

I think the tanks are the same between 86 Aircooled and 87 LC.
They made the 86 tank thinking to 87 tank with radiators.
So you have the same place for shrouds on the 2 bikes.

For those looking to create a oil pump/cooler system, inparticular Michel who seems to have asked about this a lot, you want to search for '12 volt electric oil pump' they are not too special or hard to find as a accessory item in automotive industry
VDO make one #405.040/001/001
specs here
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/files/transfer/technical/doc/vdooilpumptech.pdf
which is small and draws low current however it seems more suited for separate transmissions and diffs and not for pumping the full hot engine oil. See spec sheet and make your own mind up
You probably want something more like whats shown here
http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/oilsystems.htm
However those sorts seem to require about 5 amps and a bit bulky. You can also find pumps on ebay too. You just need to shop around and find one thats not too bulky and does not require a huge amount of current and can also handle the hotter engine oil rather than just trans/diff oil.
Small oil coolers/radiators are also not at all hard to find.
Other option is to make up a system like the Up-tite one that drives from the countershaft.
