• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Sms 630 - Keep It - Sell It - Bubble Wrap It ???

I was one of the lucky buyers who got in on the lowered price for the SMS 630 and ended up purchasing many accessories for it but to date I have only installed the folding mirrors and Pivot Pegs. I have posted a similar thread and since then went through a period of time when I questioned whether or not to sell, trade or bubble wrap it for my grandson (he is only 2 years old ). My concern is since in the US it was only a "one year wonder" would this increase the value in the future or hurt it since replacement parts may be difficult to find. The mileage stands at only 3 (three) which should help the value if it in fact bubble-wrapped and saved. I have already sold / traded off two bikes from my collection and now have interest in original "barn find" VW Beetles. My daily lower back pain limits the amount of time I can stay comfortable on a bike which is becoming shorter and shorter so that is where the 4 wheel interest started plus my wife is afraid of motorcycles. I really don't mind keeping it in storage but wanted to pass on something to him that could be enjoyed for many years. Thanks for any input you may have.

I don't know fella...too many variables (in fact, as well as it pertains to personal interest/tastes.) Personally, off the cuff, I can't help but think:

First, as far as it's potential for increasing value or collectibility- I'd have to place that near nil. While I'm happy that our bikes were designed/built in Italy and can live w/ the fact that it was a joint BMW/Husky thing, it's still the leading edge of what became much further bastardization of the breed. Now if it was the last of the true Huskies, then maybe.

Next is the question of if this is indeed all primarily for your grandson (which is a very kind, generous and thoughtful thing to do, I wish to add.) My take on that is that it's a whole lotta hoopla for some big maybe's (among those being will he even have an interest in bikes, will he truly appreciate it and use it, or preserve it, will he sell it for beer money at much below it's value, etc., etc.) If it's for his future use-ability then I'd say nah...young folks into bikes are more than likely going to want the latest/greatest technology/performance. In my opinion it's not until we get older that we appreciate what we should (again, very broadly speaking.) My concern is that he'd look at the old bike and think "are you sh*tting me? I'm gonna ride that?"

If storing a bike for that long my guess is that it's really gotta be mothballed right. I don't know enough about this, but I'm assuming it'll require at least some periodic checking in/tending to. I mention this as another consideration is who will do that while your grandson comes of age.

In the end I think it's the parts availability that would squash the idea for me. If the vision is for it to be used in 15 plus years then it's a non-starter...these things have their niggling issues (no lack of them) so unless you're going to stock pile parts in the near future that would be a real consideration.

Again- just all personal/off the cuff thoughts. Good on you for being able to collect and consider this.

My rule is if doesn't get used a year it gets sold.
Sell it and get what you can now while they are popular, in 14 years no one will be interested in it.
Any interest now in a 99 SM610?

WOW.. how much do you want for it?

You will kick yourself the rest of your life if you sell it.
It is priceless to you so keep it bubble wrapped but ride it regularly.
To me, this was the dream dual sport I wanted for a long time. I flew to another state to buy it and drove it home.
I will never sell it. I will rebuild it when the time comes, and when I am old, it will become a display in my garage of times long ago.
This Husky is a permanent part of my life.
Why would I ever sell my Husky?

I know it is a difficult decision but if it was mine I'd probably sell it if I was unable to ride it. Then if my grandson developed an interest in motorcycles I'd purchase him a 50 that he could ride at an earlier age and develop those skills that would keep him safe when he becomes old enough to acquire his motorcycle license and ventures on to the pavement.

Given the pace of Hybrid and Electric vehicle and motorcycle development, I wonder as to the place of a gasoline powered motorcycle 14+ years into the future.
Will the there be a smartphone app for the SM630 way down the line ?, if not the youngsters wont even look at it.

true.. I doubt they will actually "ride" motorcycles in the future.. probably will have virtual motorcycling, and will not even ride.. too boring to actually go outdoors when you can do it all from your bedroom

sell it and put the money towards a college fund so he can get a good job and buy a new bike of his choice if thats what he wants years down the line.

I was asking the same thing. I was looking for a 510 when I got my bike in 2011 for 6300 out the door never even heard of the 630, but in my research trying to find a 510 I discovered that you cant find anything for a good period of years and that's when the price goes up, people who ride sm's are dead set on getting one most never owned one or rode one me included its thanks to youtube. I remember when the xgames were hyping supermoto to be the next big thing stewart reed even the goat were riding it, then it disapeard, bikes like the drz, the ktms and huskies stoped coming, then youtube and boom everyone wants one in 2011 I saw very high miles drzs going for like 5300 then Suzuki brings it back in 2013 why demand and now they are back at around 3300-3500 res miles. The guys who sold em made bank. What im getting at is it depends on the time every so years the price jumps on sm's then levels out again.

My SMS 630 is the only bike in my shed I would not sell, just my opinion but it is the most beautiful motorcycle ever made and a tribute to the great Italian Huskys we all know and love. I will not buy another husky as I hate anything to do with the orange bike company. When it comes time to upgrade my 310 I will look at another brand but there will always be a SMS 630 in my shed.

yup same here I ride my crf in the dirt, my husaberg in the trails, and my te630 ANYWHERE I WANT.. unique and special bike.. I remember the online vids of the 630.. omg I wanted one so so so so bad and watched over and over.. finally got one.. and I will never sell this bike

^^ This.

Nice intentions but highly doubtful it would turn out as you expect.

Yeah, it's meant to be ridden and is such a rare thing - an actual fully competent PURE dualsport, it should be employed. :)

And I hate the idea of people mothballing ANYTHING, whether it's a Ferrari or a Husky TE 630.

I have a Mercedes 280SL Euro model 1984 that my father mothballed and I inherited. It had 28,000 miles on it... now it has 39,000 miles.. I drive it once every 3 months. I would consider it mothballed, but I still drive it.

I think most of us don't think a husky supermoto is a collector item like a Mercedes SL. But I suppose if it has sentimental value or some other draw to it then it's worth hanging onto.

I have a 79 240D that is showroom perfect. Not really a collector type car, but it's an unrestored gem so it's worth hanging onto for value appreciation. I call it my bank account but I'm not that attached to it and would sell it for the right $$.

I just noticed the drz400sm whent up from 6999 to 7189 dealer sold all the 13s before he even got them in and I just saw a smr511 sell for 8500 4000 miles
