    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

SM Wheels for TE-250

Does it make sense to get a set of SM wheels for a te-250? When I had my KLX 250, i used the bike daily for running around town and quick cruises, then off road at least twice a week. i felt like i was killing the bike off road, so decided to go back to a husky after a 30 year break.

I bought my 2010 te-250 used from a guy who used it strictly off-road, so it is geared with 12/50, and has off-road only tires. i love the setup for my off-road rides. but it basically sucks on road.

so, i have a chance at a really good deal on a set of SM 17" wheels. The owner says they were on a DRZ400 (he also said they fit his KTM too). What would it take to make these fit my TE-250? I have never done anything with different wheels before (for my KLX i swapped tires occasionally, but i am not really into doing that any more).

so would it be worth it, or would it end up costing too much to make these fit.

There is no point in trying to make DRZ400 wheels fit a Husky. They are not bolt-ons. SM wheels for a Husky are readily available at good prices and will bolt right on to your 250 with the following exceptions: if you use a large 320mm dia SM rotor, you need a brake caliper relocation bracket for the front. If you use a regular TE-sized rotor, the SM hub has larger bolts so the rotor holes need to be drilled out. For gearing, you might be able to come up with a sprocket combo that uses the same chain length as your TE.

Is it worth it? For sure if you're going to ride on a SM track. Otherwise, depends on what sucks about your TE on road and how willing you are to swap your setup back and forth. The best solution, IMO, is to have two or more bikes. If the only thing you don't like about the TE on road is the tires, you could get another set of TE wheels and put street tires on those. It'd be a little easier than swapping SM wheels.
 
thanks for the reply. i probably won't be doing SM tracks (although a friend is trying to convince me to go to loudon with him). I will mostly be doing just local street riding, so regular dirt sized rims with street tires are probably the way to go. unfortunately around here in New England, there are never any great deals on husky stuff...
 
Be careful on getting 'SM' wheels if they are specifically (not very common) for the SMR then the front wheel will not work (wrong disc to caliper alignment and spacing). Seeing as you have a TE, there will be conversion wheels that are meant to bolt in. You can use your existing disc, but remember it is smaller and thinner - the chance of warping it increases at the road track. Use a reputable shop / dealer to buy the wheels (not motostrano).
It definately is not worth it trying to transplant some other 17" wheels.

will regular wheels (18" and 21") from a 2004 CR125 fit my '10 TE-250? I would just put a more street oriented tire on them for cruising around, then use my current setup for the trails.

I highly doubt it. There's axle diameter to consider plus spacers and disc to caliper alignment. Anything can be done, just a matter of how much work you're willing to put in.
 
ok, i passed on them, but now i am thinking twice. they ended up selling for $150!! with tires that looked decent...
