    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Sluggish/weak clutch issue, 430 CR

I have been using my restored 430 (-81) for about a week now and altough I runs great I have a really annoying issue with the clutch I can't figure out.

My clutch is way too light and very 'unsmooth' to the touch when releasing. It got to the point where I added an extra return spring to the clutch lever (at the engine) to get some 'feel' back to it.

The thing is I do not know what I can do further to improve the situation.

- I have a new friction/steel plates pack
- New pressure plate as my old one was quite worn
- New thrust bearing
- I also installed a bearing instead of the seal busing on the clutch acutator lever
- I have the 185mm pushrod with a single ball bearing installed between rod and thrust bearing

I do NOT have new springs though as I thought the ones I have were super strong compared to other bikes.

Couple of things I waswondering about.

- What is your experience on the clutch operating pressure and the handle. I really dislikes my clutch right know but do not know if It is possible to get that really great 'feel' to it, I think I tried everything

- Anyone aware of the proper length of the clutch springs and the cluth spring spacers ?

Any help on this is appreciated!

Hi Lars, my 400 clutch is like a limp wristed clothing store attendant but it engages ok. i lightly sanded all the plates with #200 wet and dry as they were clearly gummed badly. Your clutch basket fingers arnt grooved? cheers

I enjoyed your desciption on how your clutch feels :) Mine just won't get any better despite whatever I do to it, so I think I have taken the cover off for the last time for a couple of weeks at least....I'll break it in now and fix the carb settings instead :)

Just for the quality check on friction plates that you received. By any chance did a later year fiber plate get mixed in on this set . Later year plates are thinner. yours should be 3.5 mm for each fiber plate. 1.2 mm on steel

I would consider new springs. What oil are you using ?? I just talked with John @ vintage husky says he always use classic 80/90 gear oil. Still reading the other post on tranny oil here and will be changing
away from bel ray tranny oil. Not sure which brand to use. Really did not have problem with bel ray, but if it gets thinner as it heats up - well I want my oil to stick/ coat all surfaces on gears clutches and bearings.

Bel ray is expensive. Like three to one cost. I can change oil more often by changing.
