  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Slow speed "Flame Out"? 2012 TE511

As I was slowly cresting a moderately steep hill, probably lugging it a little too much, tried to give a little gas and the bike abruptly died. Re-started OK, and no harm done. Don't like it happening though. I am on the 2013 Race MapII. Can I turn up my idle a bit, do I need PCV and Auto Tune? I'm considering a 13 tooth front sprocket. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
2012 TE511, 13 miles, FMF Power Core 4, Bleed screw at 2.5 ish turns out. Ground on the head is good and tight.

Reset TPS first, break it in a bit. Most of us are satisfied with just the JD6X Tuner which richens it up enough to clear out the lean spots. PCV will provide more tuning options and dealers have other maps they can download for you.

I am having terrible trouble with a similar issue. From idle, engine dies as soon as the throttle is cracked. It's driving me nuts currently. At first only happened a few times a day but last weekend was happening every fifth or sixth time I cracked the throttle. Horribly annoying.

I have not experienced this on my 2012 511, but I was aware of this problem others complained of, I keep my throttle
Hand, busy and I seem to avoid this, I have the FMF/with quietcore and racemap2. I plan on PC5, after she's broke in
Good...throttle/clutch can help evidently, I was used to 2 strokes and some underpowered 4S so its habit.
If you take it to the dealer, let us know what the verdict is....

I was plagued with the dreaded "flame outs" big time and it would always happen at the worst possible time like when I was on a rocky step up or any time
I needed forward motion. Very annoying for sure. The PCV was my saviour. That and a mechanic who's got a lot of experience dialing them in. I, admittedly, am
not that guy. It's so nice to not have to worry about stalling all the time. Love my 511.

This was a horrible problem for me as well. In fact in one stretch of trail, I flamed out eight times in two miles. The problem is that the stock map loaded into the ecu is far too lean 0 to 10% throttle. Backing out the idle screw will help alleviate this issue. A dealer will be able to load the BMW map #3 which will also help with this deficiency. A JD tuner will help to add fuel to the lower rpm range but will not fully eliminate flame outs, I have seen riders still flame out even with the JD. The powercommander is an expensive solution and possibly a complicated solution, but it completely replaces the stock maps with new ones and can be precisely increased only in the areas which need more or less fuel eliminating flame outs completely.

I had the same flame out problems with race map II and the FMF slip on. The bike seemed to always pick the worst possible time to die. The JD Tuner is a miracle worker. I ride in tight eastern woods and have no problems anymore. It's the best money I've spent on my 511.

I pick up my new 511 after work tomorow, I ordered oil filters, oil, spare air filter and bash plate now I will add a JD to my list. Is there any other suggestions ?

I suggest that you reflash ecu with racemap 3 while you are in dealer, which eliminates the need for JD. Cheaper, and helps a lot more. If your dealer can't do this, help can be found elsewhere. Add to your list husky aluminium gas cap and oil filter cover.
Solid motor, can last over 200h without rebuild if oil changes are made frequent. I change oil every 4h.
Take care with all frame bearings, open them and add vaseline.
Enjoy your bike.

No need for a spare air filter as the OEM one is washable. I have a brand new in the box JD tuner that I'd sell cheapish if you are interested.

I always have 2 air filters. I wash and oil one, hang it in a plastic bag, so excess oil can drain out. When I change oil,
I change air filters. They are not expensive. I think the PCV is a better choice and if you shop can be had for $299.00,
and is much more tunable, better suited for this bike in my opinion. (hardracing.com)
