  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Just bought a brand new TE450 -08. First time on the enduro course I did the sound check we all need to do. In sweden it's not allowed to be above 94dB. I had the big original catalytic muffler on and the standard "db killer" installed. The thing is:I DID NOT PASS THE TEST :confused:

Have anyone experienced something similar?

I am currently waiting for the dealer to supply me with the P/U kit Arrow muffler.
Does anyone know if this will give less than 94 dB?
I don't want to be the one who takes the blame for disturbing the neighbourhood. Is there any other aftermarket muffler that would do the trick?
Does the EFI need to be adjusted is choose not to go with the Arrow?

What he purchased is only for the '09 TE models, not the '08. But maybe it fits right in an '08 and maybe it could be done with some work. Also, he modified it with a spark arrestor. Not sure that's needed in Sweden.

The small db-killer delivered with my bike did not have any wire screen attachted. Otherwise I think it looks the same.

But what about performance?

The Arrow with big db-killer or another aftermarket muffler?

And what about the EFI?

This must have been solved by the Husky teams. I'll guess they have to check their bikes every race.:confused:
 
I had ordered the '08 db killer just like was on your bike and decided to return it as it's too similar to the spark arrestor. I just ordered the bigger '09 TE db killer as pictured and will see if it can be made to work in an '08. My bike has the '08 Arrow power up exhaust. The Arrow exhaust is very loud without any db killer and about the same as the stock can with the same spark arrestor/db killer transferred from the stock USA exhaust. In other words, not a solution for you.

Are you the only '08 TE owner getting sound tested in Sweden?

Regarding the FI, it may affect it. We'll see. My bike runs -much- better than stock with the O2 sensor removed per the power-up kit.

This is the thing that makes me most confused :confused:
I cannot be the only one to exprerience the higher db. How could it be that a brand new completly stock machine do not pass the test.
A friend of my passed the sound test with his TE 250 -08. But just barely. He has the Arrow and stock dbkiller without spark arrestor. I'll guess that solution will not do it for the 450.
I talked to the swedish importer and their propolsal was to buy the Arrow exhaust and fit a wire screen as your spark arrestor on the db killer.
There must be someone on this forum that has a TE450 -08 with the Arrow and with the spark arrestor db killer that has measured the sound?

jlk, do you know if the big -09 db-killer is the same for 250/310/450/510?

The '09 TE 250/310/450/510 use the same muffler, so the big db-killer is the same also. Besides, there is only the one part number shown for the big db-killer.
 
So there are 3 options:

1. Arrow muffler with stock dbkiller with spark arrestor (If it could be verified to be less than 94 dB).

2. Arrow muffler with the big '09 dBkiller (Question remains for the performance and adjustment of the EFI)

3.Any other aftermarket muffler with less than 94 dB (EFI tuning?)

Let´s hear some voting :)
 
My understanding is that there is a lot of noise from the intake and that may be why you are not passing.

From my experience with my last 4 stroke, I found a big increase in noise with the airbox lid off. But the Husky doesn't have a lid, so I am not sure what can be done.
 
I agree there is a lot of noise coming from the "airbox". But still, I am over 96bB!
I cannot be the one and only to experience this :confused:
There where loads of japs and KTM´s the same day doing the sound test. What I saw, they all got their bikes approved:rant:

The '09 DB killer arrived yesterday. Hall's is quick! It is quite a bit too long to fit the '08 power-up exhaust. Not sure if I'll cut it down to fit or return it.

In another thread someone mentioned a Doma exhaust. Here's a link.

DOMA Wie ein auspuff! Nur 92 dB in der Wald :banana:

As maybe a German would have put it!

I'll guess this is a suitable "Auspuff" for the Husky. Can anyone say anything about performance and EFI tuning regarding the 92 db version of the DOMA?
 
Husky pipe too loud! Need to quite down.

I have an 08 te510 with the power up kit, this bike rocks but is a bit to loud. I will ride dualsport events and need to pass tech inspection. The stock pipe is way to heavy to put back on. Does Arrow make an insert? I was thinking of trying something like an insert from baja designs or something homemade. Any ideas?
 
Most of the noise when I'm riding seems to come from the air box. It's a lot more open than my old DRZ. My Arrow silencer with spark arrester doesn't seem too loud. It is a little louder than the stock pipe but is half the weight.
 
According to the swedish importer the Arrow is actually more quiet than the big cat muffler...:confused:
 
I pulled the spark arrester out of the stock pipe as the rattleing was driving me crazy, and since my bike isn't in the woods, and New England is wet... :thumbsup: I ride with a guy with the arrow can on the exact same bike, and my buddies tell me the stocker without the arrester is louder than the arrow without the arrester. :excuseme: I really don't think I would meet the 94 limit for club rides with my stocker.

I just ordered a DB Dawg decible killer, they claim a 10 db reduction in noise. A magazine test said it was more like a 5 db reduction but both the manufacturer and the magazine article claim that there is no noticable loss of power so I thought I would give it try.
It should be here in a day or two and I'll let everyone know how it works out.
 
Rajobigguy, could you please let us know which year and model you are riding. And of course what muffler you have installed?

Perhaps the dB dawg in the Arrow is the way to go. Very interested in your result :thumbsup:

My bad:banghead:. It's a '06 610 with a Leo Vince muffler. I installed the DB Dawg this morning and it is a bit quieter but I need to take it out on the road for a bit to see how it performs. I'll get back to you later this evening.
