    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

In the spirit of the advrider camp thread...

Let's see some TR650's ready to camp. You know, fully loaded, strap-o-rama, beverly hillbilly type setups, super lightweight setups, and everything in between. Bonus points for showing your bike at your campsite with your gear fully deployed. Nearly everything I've done someone has done better, so help me and others optimize our setups. I bought my Strada with moto camping intended as one of the key uses.

I'll get us started with my prototype setup. It's got everything I'm thinking I'll have except for some water bottles on the saddlebags and maybe a tang bag. Here it is after about 20 miles of road test, including some 80mph freeway to make sure all was stable. It passed with flying colors. I'm anxious to try it off pavement. I'm a bit concerned about standing descents where I want to put my weight back.

I'm really please with the BR moto side racks. Nice place to anchor straps, and makes a nice tunnel around the exhaust where nothing gets too close.

The stack, bottom to top:
- Wolfman expedition saddlebags
- REI Camp Mat - 30 inches wide, I like to be comfortable
- Black Diamond Vista 3 person tent
- A really big sleeping bag
- My pelican mounted on the stock rack makes a nice place to snug things up against.

I ran two hose clamps through the circular cutouts in the front brace. Easy as pie. Once the Altrider skid comes in I plan to modify the mount a little.

What's the outside diameter and how long is it?
 
3'" diameter on the PVC. Not sure the measurement. I'll pop out there with a. Tape measure later and try to get you a measurement cap to cap.
 
First load out with the Terra. Was able to get a Marmot sleeping bag, ALPS Lynx 1 man tent, Columbia bag liner, Koppen pillow and Thermarest inflatable mattress in an Ortlieb medium roll top bag. Strapped in front of the tail bag it's a great back support. Good to have gear from my bicycle touring days as most of it is lightweight and compacts nicely. It looks like I'm well on the way to turning a 400 pound motorcycle into a 475 pound motorcycle.

I recently returned from a 424 mile shakedown ride of my Terra in full adventure ride configuration.

Basically I treat camping like I was backpacking with a motorized mule. The setup is constantly being refined and modified to suit the kind of ride I am doing and has evolved from my KLR 650 setup. I have done many long trips on it including the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR). I almost always camp near abundant water, but it must be purified. I carry two liters in my camelback and 1 liter in a pannier.

I find that volume is as important a consideration as weight. I load all of the heavier stuff down low in the Happy-Trail Teton panniers using my KLR 650 adapted HT racks. Nearly everything fits in the panniers. I didn't need the rear Coocase top case, but it was handy for lighter stuff for quick access and to safely store my Toshiba netbook PC that I use for trail blog composing. Since this photo I have mounted bottle carriers above the passenger foot pegs. I an also looking to eliminate or replace the Coocase with a Pelican or small waterproof duffel. Coocase works great and it can hold my helmet on a lockable place, but I hate the non-Terra worthy bubble scooter look.


I weigh about 195 lbs in full ATGATT. I take all of the pads out of my riding coat and wear a ballistic vest underneath it instead. This provides superior protection and I can take the coat off and just wear the ballistic vest in hot weather and stow the coat on a bungee net behind me.

Here is the breakdown:

Tank Bag, Giant Loop Waterproof Fandango

  • Sony NEX-6 mirrorless compact DSLR w/16-55 compact zoom + 2 lenses (55-210mm, 12 mm) + 2 spare batteries & 12v/110v charger

  • REI 1.5" self inflating sleeping pad
  • LED tent overhead light

  • emergency trail jack/stand made from a walking cane (old KLR trick)
Pannier 2, Food, water, clothes, misc stuff, and cooking gear (about 20-25 lbs loaded including pannier):
  • Jetboil stove
  • Freeze dried meals, instant oatmeal, Starbucks VIA instant coffee. instant hot chocolate, etc.
  • 1 liter water in water container
  • Steripen + Sawyers water purification equipment including 3 collapsible water containers + collapsible 10 zo cup (this all fits in a 1 qt ziplock freezer bag
  • 2 Platypus collapsible water containers (1 liter + 2 liter)
  • parachute cord, first aid kit
  • Crazi Creek Hex 2.0 camp/in-tent chair
  • Clothes, hat, etc
  • collapsible plate, bowl and cup + spork
Coocase top case (about 12 lbs loaded)
  • Toshiba Netbook PC
  • snacks, maps, etc
  • Cooling vest + REI compact vest (mostly this stuff was used to cushion the netbook PC)
Two Moose Tool bags (about 3 lbs ea, located one each side below passenger seat)
  • Tools for trail maintenance and tire change

Camelback water pack (I wear this)
