  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Retard your timing?

Believe it or not - to mellow out the low to mid throttle response. With the PWK carb and the FMF Gnarly pipe, the low end power (although very fun while trail riding), is beating me up a bit in the harescrambles. It is hard to steer from tree to tree while riding only on the back tire lol. :D

I've turned the stator plate back (counter clockwise) approximately 1/8" and am going to see how that works...

i think that will advance the timing no?

I did it on my YZ and it helped minimally. Like others have implied here, I couldn't imagine wanting to tame down my husky any. The power is perfect for me, even in tight enduros. Let us know how it works out for you.

I retarded the timing on my KTM 380 and it made the bike nicer everywhere. Smoother transition and longer rev. If you don't like it you just put it back.

I have a WR250 that I also race in HS and enduros. Yes, it can be handful, unless you're in great shape. I'm not.

I ended up putting a Rekluse on. I balked at the price initially, but after using it, I can't imagine riding this bike without it. It adds some flywheel effect and tames the power down, by allowing you to ride lazy, a gear high in the woods without worrying about stalling the bike. You can still clutch it, if you need instant power. I also run my jetting on the rich side.

I also have a 250X which I love too, but stick with the stock clutch on that bike. I don't to get too lazy.

Which bike are you faster on in the woods?

I advanced the spark (turned the plate clockwise) on my 144 and really made the bike nastyer. It sound crisper and throttle response was improved.

How much did you advance the spark Martin on your bike. I can not get the fast throttle response off bottom it not bogging just slow to react on my 2008 cr 125. Thanks for help.

I will take a picture of my ignition and post it here, since I did that on april 22, and cannot exactly/perfectly remember how much and wich side... :o
It improved throttle response, the bike run crisper and it sound more agressive. I wouldn't say it add any horsepower, but the throttle response is an improvement.

Advancing ignition may increase responsiveness but I think it will lose torque. Isnt that why they have an adjustable ignition on some bikes to use the retarded setting for hills / mud
If it were for motocross - CR it wouldnt matter

Here is the picture. Stock position is dead center (you see the two bolts on the side of the plate, with a slot). I put it that way, and I really think it made the bike run better with the oem 144. These are the only modification I made to the bike, along with a slightly richer main jet. My buddies noticed the bike sounded more aggressive than before so I am not crazy about that ;)

Retarding the timing on my WR250 actually made it HARDER to ride. It lost some bottom end, so I was having to fan the clutch too much to keep it moving at pace. I put it back to the stock setting...
