    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I have a 2009 TE 610 that just went over 800 miles. It was running great all weekend until I heard a light ticking noise at a stoplight. Approximately a mile down the road the bike began loosing power and I pulled off the road. The noise became louder. Fortunately, I was about 35 miles from home and my wife and son were able to pick me and the TE up in the Truck.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience with a bike that is practically new with 800 miles? My first impression was that one of the valves were sticking, but the ticking became a loud rattling, and a major loss of power to a point that it stalled.

I checked the engine visually not seeing any obvious damage or loose parts. I've been babying this bike for proper break-in miles.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a shop book yet. I would think that this would be a warranty item that I only have 800 miles on the bike. It sounds like a ball-peen hammer inside the engine when I try to start it.

Just curious - what is an auto decomp and a manual decomp adjuster?

The auto decomp is a little bobweight on the exhaust cam that holds one of the exhaust valves open at very low rpms so that the electric start / kicker can spin the engine over easily. When the engine fires it disengages. The manual decomp (if your bike has one) is a little lever on the clutch reservoir cap that opens an exhaust valve via a cable to allow the engine to be spun over easily for e.g. bump starting the bike. The cable terminates at a lever on the right side of the cylinder head and the cable (iirc) should have 3mm free play.
 
Well the 610 doesn't have a manual decompress lever so that's no it but the auto decompress is designed to hold you're exhaust valve slightly open during starting. It could be hanging up which would account for both the noise and lack of power although if they hang up it's usually when you first start the engine, still it's worth looking at.
 
The 610 was taken in and the prognosis is a defective Cam Bearing. They showed me a couple BB's and some metal that were laying on the bottom of the crankcase.

Next step is to inspect the entire engine for other damage in the process of the bearing coming undone. They told me this has never occurred on a new bike with 800 miles. Hopefully this was a random occurrence.

George has been finding "counterfit" bearings from China that have been failing early. Something to think about, and press your dealer about it....
 
We had this conversation while standing in the workroom. I asked them if we were replacing the bearing with something improved. He replied the bearing will be the same, but did comment that we can order a different bearing if that's something I would want.

I will call them back on this. They kept saying that they've never had a failure like this. Usually, when a part fails like this there are more reports out there that correlate to the same issue. I just can't believe that I'm the only outlier here.
 
George ordered FAG bearings for the two bikes he fixed. The counterfeits were so close. The factory said from the outside, only the laser etching was conclusive that they were fake. The boxes were fakes and good ones. It has to do with intermediary distributors and currency fluctuations and making a little extra (aka greed).

Hear's a read on it.. I would guess a dealer might be able to tell from the laser etchings but otherwise the fake is mostly on the inside.

The exact same problem with my TE610 08.The bike with few km and suddenly had that noise the engines lack of power...etc...The problem was a faulty cam bearing...Replaced and repaired in the terms of warranty.That happened back in 08 when the bike was bought.Nothing else to complain since then...
