  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

rad cap

I think it went bad. I can't stop overheating. I can be riding 40* ambient air and 10% throttle at 40 mph and I'll boil over in a few minutes. I changed the coolant and flushed it a couple times with distilled water. Running engine ice. It sat for a couple months and now it overheats after a few minutes of riding. Figured the first thing I should do is a radiator cap before I get too carried away.

The bike is out at my shop so it is hard to check right now, but I think it is a 1.4. It is the cap that it came with when I bbought it 3years ago.

So what is a good source for a new one? I can't seem to find 'em from the big internet stores. Last time I priced something from halls they were charging a ridiculous shipping charge. Maybe motoxotica? OR uptite? Is there a cap from another bike that will cross over to mine?

My basic experience with liquid cooled engines says the first, and usually the cheapest and quickest, thing to change is the radiator cap when an overheating problem exists. I wish it was an easy to find part.

Nothing against you guys, but I was just looking for a recommended source. It is the weekend so I can't order anything. If I have a list of places to call Monday morning then I will be in good shape.

It's not the cap, you shouldn't even be up to a decent operating temp with those conditions. Have you confirmed a steady stream of water entering the rad at idle, moving up to a full, splashing riot with some added revs?

I have verified that water is moving through all lines, both radiators and there are no obstructions where it goes through the motor. I pulled the hoses and check them. I pulled the water pump cover and checked for anything in there. I also cranked the motor to verify the impeller was moving. That is all free stuff. It sat through a winter and now I have this problem. I had it stored in a garage, pretty mild conditions really. I had freeze protection on the coolant down to -30 something.

I have personally seen the caps fail for no particular reason other than just being old. I just want to replace it. I just want to know what you guys recommend for a source. Maybe a brand that is good or something that I should stay away from. Maybe a cap that will fit from a different year.

How do you know it isn't the cap?! Do they last forever?! Maybe I should just throw the whole bike in the trash and go buy a brand new one. That surely would fix my radiator cap.

Unless the hoses are worn or damaged, the only one I would be concerned about is the stock crossover hose. It's a good upgrade to do anyway.

Which one are you referring to when you reference the stock crossover hose? Is the the little tiny one that seems to balance the radiators?

Once again, as mentioned in above link I've haven't been here much in a long itme......this time lost my job just over a year a ago, got new one couple months later, long hours since, etc, etc,
Radiator caps do go bad, especially if they've blow off a time or two.
As stated in link, I went with the CV4 1.4bar/20psi and did not replace hoses.
Plugged pilot jet will make it run lean and cause extra heat.....doesn't tale much and common cause after sitting for a few months.
In addition to that I ended up getting a factory high flow water pump that I am really happy with. I only went on three ride last year totaling about 150 miles, but two of those were brutal steep slow 1st-2nd gear single track and it only dribbled a couple times......for my 510 that was good!
