• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Quick "what Would You Do" Oil Change Q- Te630

Hi gang. This falls under "my poor planning doesn't constitute an emergency"... :)

My TE630 is approaching 500 miles, and I of course want to change the oil this weekend. I did change it at 175 miles to get some shavings, etc. out. I can get 15w50 locally (would rather have 10w50, but in these temps 15 will work for another short interval) but the issue is obtaining an oil filter....no one locally has one...fun.

So the question becomes (and it's an opinion thing) do I dump the oil this weekend to get any additional debris out and not change the filter, or run this oil until next weekend and do the oil and filter? I lean towards going to next weekend and doing it all right. I doubt I'll put more than 125 miles on it over this weekend.

You've already done one oil change, I think you'll be just fine waiting... Why so soon after the first one, anyway?
 
Thanks guys...I think that's best also...was likely overthinking it.

RDTCU- it's because I tend to be a little anal about these things. :) I did the first at 175 and had some debris to drop (what I'd call normal, on the magnet and in the filters...a very small amount of very fine shavings.) My thinking is that most of that dropped w/ that change, but that it wouldn't hurt to do this next "flush" just to be safe. I also plan to take the bike in to the dealer at around 800 miles to have the valves checked (might as well, as it needs to go to the dealer to be hooked up to the iBeat anyway for another issue..and I may wait until 1K to do that and get the valves checked.)

so now you know when you buy your next new bike to have the dealer throw in an oil filter that you most likely need in a few weeks.

Well yeah, of course. I had them give me the first and also the first 2 qts of oil but yeah, shouldda picked more up while there, but thought they'd be commonly stocked.

Okay, being mechanically challenged I have to ask a dumb question. I am trying to change the oil. I removed the 10mm drain plug from below and oil came out as expected. My only concern is that only about 6 oz or less of oil came out. I think there is a second drain plug, please correct me if I am wrong, but it appears to be a large hex / allen type bolt that I can't seem to find a proper tool for. Do I need to remove the second drain plug as well?

Yes, the right wrench (combination of wrenches) should have been included in your tool kit.
 
That is what I would have thought, I have gone through all the tools and nothing fits. It is just allen right? 12mm or more?

Have you tried using the outside of one of the double-ended sockets from the kit?

I would go double-check myself, but I'd have to drop the skid plate :P
 
Yes, that is the tool I would have thought of. It almost fits, but just not quite. I couldn't even tap it in. Either they stiffed me for the right tool, or this one is so poorly made that it won't work. I ended up using a 3/8" allen, but would like to know the correct size so I have that on hand. I think it is a 10 or 12 mm. I guess I could take the plug to the hardware store and find out. I appreciate you help though, thanks!
 
Do you have the owner's manual and shop manual? If not, send me a PM. I believe oil change instructions are in the documentation.
 
I have the parts manual and the owners manual, but not the shop manual. The owners manual as far as I can tell does not have instructions for changing the oil, and does not list the included tools for reference. If I am looking in the wrong place please let me know. Thanks.
 
all the service instructions are on the usb manual, this I know as I just did my first oil change on the 630
 
The hard copy manual is certainly different than the USB manual. The hard copy, at the least the one I got, only shows where to check the oil level and to add oil. The USB goes into much more detail. Wish I had read this first because I did not know there were three other additional metal filters I was supposed to clean. Live and learn, it's all good. Thanks JTemple for the download.

I have the same problem with te 630 the alen head wrench included does not fit, what was its size ? did you finally get it figured out ?

My TE310 takes an 8mm. I wouldn,t think they would have another size but you never know. BTW my dealer told me to use a good brand tool as they are easy to round out! Have not bought them yet but 7602 has a nice set for filters and drain plug.
