  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Questions about worn impeller on te450

vtskier

Husqvarna
AA Class
Hi everyone AGAIN!

Coolant looked nasty grey. Drained and took off impeller cover. Impeller fell into my hand. Nut is still on shaft and shaft looks fine. The impeller has worn so much that almost two shafts could fit through it???

Questions... Where did all the material go? Any idea what caused it? What should i do and look for from here aside from buying a new impeller?

Do I need a new bushing or bearing as well?

Thank in advance.

Does your shaft still look OK? It's steel so it probably gouged the impeller, which is aluminum. The gray color of the coolant was probably the ground up aluminum. Did your bike ever overheat much?

Shaft and seal look fine and no the bike did not seem to overheat. It has been cold lately during rides and I try to keep her from just idling on the trail anyway. I guess I have been running a true air cooled machine. Overheats can damage head gasket I imagine??

Seems like a somewhat common occurrence on this bike. Any ideas to cause other then just wear and tear? Maybe the nut loosened and allowed play on the impeller? Nut is still on shaft but was loose, as it had nothing to tighten down.

Thanks.

When my bike overheated from no coolant, the head gasket was damaged, the water pump seal and shaft were damaged, the intale manifold was damaged, and 1 rad hose sprung a leak from too much heat.

How did you tell the head gasket went? Was there coolant in the oil? I am hoping i get lucky. Due for an oil change anyway, so I will have a look. Will slap on new impeller and see how things go from there.

Thanks for sharing your stories. Couldn't tell from picture exactly but it looks like the threads on your shaft were all buggered?

That's somebody else's shaft, looked OK to me.

I got coolant in the oil from the damaged water pump seal. I got coolant in the combustion chamber from the damaged head gasket.

Definitely put in a new impeller, make sure the coolant is flowing (see vid below) and just keep an eye on things.

Just to follow up and hopefully close out thread for future searches....

New impeller arrived today from motoxotica and it fit right on shaft. I secured it this time with a lock washer and thread lock. Pumps the water through the system beautifully and I believe I got lucky with no damage to seals, gaskets and shaft!!

Rode an hour of tight, slow singletrack and all appears good with no cross contamination of coolant and oil. No white smoke out exhaust either. Sometimes you get lucky and I will continue to keep a close eye on everything.

Thanks for your help Older HuskyRider!!

also change out your older impeller with the 2010 updated one, both the cover and impeller are bigger and flow more fluid.
